I was hoping to learn some useful insights and information on the topic

As a faculty member in an engineering department, I was hoping to learn some useful insights and information on the topic. Unfortunately, the book is too short and it lacks the required depth to provide this type of material. In fact, some parts of it read like a literature review for a thesis, rather than a handbook. Besides going over material already published in the literature, the authors do not present an authoritative point of view. This is what is necessary in a book of this kind, and I could not find it here. Additionally, the whole role of RA vs TA, where RA is an externally funded position for PhD students, is a crucial distinction in many fields, such as engineering. It adds another level of complexity to our role as advisors. Again, very little attention was given to this aspect.

An improbable delight! -- highly recommended

THE STAR-CROSSED BRIDE is the third novel of the Once Upon a Wedding miniseries by Kelly McClymer. The Fensters separate themselves from Victorian society in one distinctive way -- rather than adhering to the grim convention of marrying for wealth or title, they choose to marry for love.
Three years ago Valentine Fenster and his beloved Emily Wertherley attempted to elope because her family would not have considered Valentine an acceptable match. Indeed, Emily's mother has her eyes set on becoming a marchioness, at the very least. Valentine, as only a Viscount, did not possess a sufficiently powerful enough title. Unfortunately, when they stopped for a bite to eat, Emily's cousin Simon stood before them. Admitting that he'd rather die before he heart Emily, Valentine allows Simon to lead her away. Emily believes his words indicate that marrying him would hurt her; inferring that her reputation has more value than her heart.
Emily's first two betrothals ended when the men died before reaching the altar. Now she's engaged to Lord Granbury, the wedding waiting until her year of mourning for her father has passed. Lady Granbury does not welcome Valentine's arrival at her castle, and resents his intrusion. Further, she does not listen to Valentine's warnings regarding Emily's intended husband. Lady Granbury believes desire for Emily overrides Valentine's concerns, and will not hear the truth of his message because she believes this to be the last chance to restore her daughter's reputation and position in society.
Determined to warn Emily himself, Valentine watches the castle and contemplates how to reach her. Not knowing he waits below, Emily makes a rope from her bed sheet, exciting the castle through her window. When she lets go to drop to the ground, she lands in Valentine's arms. He tells her they cannot run away together, however, because it would ruin her reputation. He convinces her to sneak back in through the kitchen, accompanies her to her room for a moment, and eats food she refused earlier. Too bad they didn't know the beverage had been drugged. As the impossible situation goes from bad to worse, the reader cannot possibly refrain from thoroughly enjoying their escapades.
While many miniseries are centered around the women that connect the series, Kelly McClymer breaks convention herself by choosing to champion the brother of this family. Further, while the plot is at times entirely improbable, the delight and humor that McClymer brings to her writing makes it thoroughly enjoyable. An absolutely delightful read, I highly recommend THE STAR-CROSSED BRIDE.

Predictible

I bought this book after reading and enjoying "The Fairy Tale Bride", which is the first in the series.

Although romance books tend to be somewhat predictable (all with their villain), this was beyond boring. I ended up skipping about 50 pages just to get through it.

The Plot:
Mean, bad guy convinces young beautiful girl to marry because evil mother told her that her true love had already married. True love finds out he is a murderer and comes to her rescue. To foil plans for the wedding true love and damsel marry, but true love won't consummate because he wants to save her honor.

Bring in the personal maid, whose sister was murdered by the villain, lots of cat and mouse chase scenes, etc...

Bottom line: there are much better romance books to choose from!

Drove Me Crazy

First I would like to say that I enjoyed the Fairy Tale Bride, immensely. It was a free download and I was happy to buy the boxed set of books 1 -4 and the boxed set of books 5 -8. I was happy to start on Star Crossed Bride because I enjoyed the characters of the other book.

Synopsis: Valentine and Emily were prevented from marrying three years ago by her family and attempted an elopement. The elopement was foiled by Emily's cousin, the Duke of Kerstone (Fairy Tale Bride). After two of Emily's fiances died before reaching the altar with her she is on her third engagement forced on her by her mother. The groom to be, the Marquis of Granbury, is a despot who murders servant girls and wants to control Emily. Emily's evil mother could care less about her daughter and sells her to the Marquis for Emily's dowry.

Emily decides to escape out of her bedroom window and falls into the arms of none other than Valentine Fenster, her one and only love. Valentine had come to warn Emily's mother about the marquis and his murderous habits. Valentine decides to take chivalry to a whole new level and return Emily to the clutches of her evil mother and murderous fiance in order to protect her reputation and wait for her cousin the duke to arrive and save the day before the marriage. Valentine hides in plain sight as a footman and Emily's mother never recognizes him in her household because his haircut is such a good disguise. Valentine decides to elope with Emily to protect her from marriage anyway but wants to keep it a secret to protect her reputation. HUH?? At this point I was screaming at the book and especially Emily for her willfulness, not listening to Valentine and ruining many a plan to keep her safe. It is never good when I scream at a book and feel complete exasperation with the characters. In the end Emily's reputation is ruined anyway when Valentine is accused of murdering the marquis (who faked his death) and blurting out that she and Valentine are married. All of the protecting of reputations and self sacrifice for each other was all for nothing in the end.

I really wanted to like this book but almost didn't finish it out of frustration with the characters and the storyline. I am now on the third book in the series and hope it isn't as silly as this book ended up being. I have the whole series based on how much I liked the first book that I read by Kelly McClymer. I am hoping she will be a favorite author.

The Magic of The Little White Horse

The Little White Horse is an exceptional and magical book. I have read few books that can compare with the imaginative imagery, the depth of the characters and the originality of the story. The protagonist, Maria Merryweather, is thirteen years old at the start of the book. She, her governess, and her pet dog, are travelling to Merryweather Manor by coach to stay with her great-uncle after her father's death. Her explorations of the delightully described manor and the nearby village of Silverydew lead her to see that not all is as happy as it seems. Before she knows it, she finds a destiny before her that builds up to a decision between selfishness, as her ancestors have done, and humbleness and selflessness. Only then can the wrongs be righted and Maria see her little white horse she dreams of. I enjoyed the book because of the lovely descriptions of the manor and the valley, and the realisticness of the characters. Maria and her friends are not perfect heroes and heroines, but they are lovable and their character developing is crucial to the plot. The book keeps you reading as you discover with Maria the secrets of the manor and the village. Elizabeth Goudge's skillful imagery conjure up a wonderful picture of the 19th century English town where the magic is timeless. If you enjoy fantasy and magic, you will love this book.

delightful and lovely!!

found a copy of this in my attic a few years ago, and ended up giving it to a girl I babysat over the summer, so I just had to buy myself a copy. this book is such a lovely gem! some might say it's too much, but I just adore all the loving detail and reading this book is like enjoying traditional afternoon tea in a spring garden in full bloom, complete with friends and easy cheerful conversation. thank you so much for this glimpse back into my childhood!
also, the movie partly based on this book, (and aptly renamed The Secret of Moonacre) is also a dreamy lovely thing! the plot has been altered somewhat, but it doesn't ruin anything, especially since they didn't take the original name of the book. why doesn't this happen anymore in modern cinema!! it would make everything so much easier, and help loving fans see it as a different version of their favorite characters and keep it separate from the book!

I read this book 20 times or more as a child. I even remember which shelf it was on at the public library. At the age of 58 I read it again and fell in love again. The imagery and lessons are timeless and I did so want a lion that was said to be a dog. Magical, beautifully written and a story that stays with you for, oh say, 50 years.

Excellent Zoot Suit Riot Study Tool

Luis Alvarez describes the development of an identity for each of several minority groups during WWII. He focuses on the zoot suit counter-culture and its relation to sailers and to other minorities. This book helped me understand the significance of cultural development during WWII. It was very helpful on my college paper about zoot suit riots.

My son was assigned a paper to write on racial problems during World War II. He chose the Zoot Suit Riots as his subject. This book gave him an additional perspective that he wouldn't have gotten otherwise. Alan Sultan is a professor of mathematics at Queens College of the City University of New York. He has authored and co-authored numerous research and expository articles and is the primary author of the recently published, "The Mathematics That Every Secondary Math Teacher Needs to Know". and "A Primer on Real Analysis." He is also a recipient of the Queens College Presidential Teaching Award, as well the Key Club Award for Excellence in Teaching. His greatest joy is trying to get people to enjoy applied mathematics as much as he does by making it accessible to a wider audience.

Excellent guide to linear programming

A department oversight meant that the book we used to use for linear programming wasn't ordered before the beginning of the semester, so I had the opportunity to choose another book. I went with this one, supplementing it sometimes with Introduction to Linear Optimization (Athena Scientific Series in Optimization and Neural Computation, 6) (which, I learned after receiving it, is a graduate-level textbook). I was somewhat nervous, since I had never heard of the publisher before, but this is in fact a second edition of a book that used to be published by Academic Press, now a subsidiary of Elsevier. I don't regret my decision at all.

In the course of one semester, I was able to cover chapters 1-6 and 10, which include not only geometry and the simplex algorithm (along with a proof of correctness and termination) but duality theory, sensitivity analysis, and the basics of integer programming. This approach is more theoretical than applied, and made for an excellent overview of linear programming. I usually have trouble covering what the textbooks say can be done in one semester, so other instructors should be able to cover a lot more than I did. (On the other hand, I had a small class of smart math majors, so maybe not.)

The book relies heavily on the compact simplex tableau, rather than the extended simplex tableau. I am not sure whether there is any theoretical or pedagogical advantage to one over the other, aside from the fact that the compact tableau is so much shorter. I taught the extended tableau first myself, transitioning to the compact tableau; this text does them in reverse. The explanation of the compact tableau is rigorous nonetheless; the main difference is that, after having accustomed herself to the compact tableau, the student may find the extended tableau more of a sideshow curiosity. I suspect that I will follow the author's approach next time, or perhaps even skip the extended tableau completely.

Many of the proofs look superficially to be done "by example", especially in comparison to texts that present every idea using complicated notation. In fact, most proofs in this book are both rigorous and, more importantly for me, readable by students averse to awful notation. I used them to write more general explanations that the students followed. For the most crucial matter, however, the author has clearly invested time and thought. Chapter 4 provides a well-organized, user-friendly approach to the theory of the simplex algorithm, including correctness, termination, degeneracy, and Bland's rule. It does shirks neither generality nor notation, but argues from the compact tableau, which the author established rigorously at an earlier point in the text. I was quite pleased!

This text can also prove useful to researchers who need to learn a little bit of linear programming for their own projects. I'm in that category, which is one reason I took the class this semester. It has proven invaluable.

As for the book itself: though it is an inexpensive paperback, the paper and the binding held up very well over the semester, surviving a water stain in my bag and abuse from my four year-old daughter's pen. It was printed in the USA, and doesn't look as if it will fall apart anytime soon. I work in a poor part of the country, so this cost/quality benefit is a major consideration; hardback books from many of the big companies fall apart quicker than this!

The author's email appears in the preface, with an invitation for comments. I contacted him several times over the semester with questions, typos, and comments, and he was both responsive and helpful.

The book does not cover computational complexity, interior point methods, or the criss-cross algorithm, so the reader who wants that material should look elsewhere. I'm pretty sure that interior-point methods and the criss-cross algorithm are nonstandard at the undergraduate level, and perhaps complexity is, too, but I care enough about computational complexity that I taught it, using the other text I cited above. The students had no problem following the argument, so Sultan's text does a good job preparing the students for those ideas.

The exercises are fairly easy, though non-trivial. Some contained typographical errors, but Sultan has told me he will correct them in an upcoming edition.

Different texts define a "standard" linear program differently. Sultan defines it this way: "Maximize u subject to Ax=b." If you have a preference for one approach or the other, or if (like me) you want to supplement this book with another, keep that difference in mind.

A final observation. I have struggled for years to get students to read the textbook, even giving reading assignment and quizzes. It never worked in the past, but this semester's students read Sultan's book, told me they sometimes used it as a reference, and came to class with questions about the reading! Alan Sultan has written a book that students read and learn from. I will definitely use this text again, and recommend it highly.

The best book I've read on how to set-up & solve LP problems

Alan Sultan has done something great! He has taken a complex subject, and made it undestandable to the average person.
I've just started my graduate program in Industrial Engineering, and need a good primer on LP problem function. My background in Comp.Sci. did not prepare me for the study of I.E. I needed a good resource to explain the fundamentals such that they could be quicky and easily comprehended.
Mr. Sultan's text provides a wonderful resource which helps me 'dechiper' my graduate level texts! Way to go, Alan!!

Excellent first book on LP

This book (the paperback 2nd edition) provides a very simple and very well written introduction to linear programming; In fact, I cannot imagine anyone
writing a simpler treatment without sacrificing rigor. A college freshman could easily
read this book on his/her own and learn the basic techniques. Calculus is not required...only a background in pre-calculus and
advanced high-school algebra. This book introduces LP by way of the "corner point theorem"
and this method is very effective in teaching the fundamental idea of LP. Beware that this book does not use
Linear Algebra and is based on the simplex tableau. However, this is the preferred approach for the beginner.

The reader interested in taking the next step may consult the following intermediate books that all emphasize linear algebra:

1. Solow, Linear Programming. This is an intermediate book that assumes knowledge of basic linear algebra but still
attempts to review all background material. Interestingly this book also has a generic chapter on how to construct
mathematical proofs. It then goes on to use these methods in the remainder of the text to prove Theorems and Lemmas related to
LP. Overall this book
is absolutely fantastic and not as well know as it should be. (Dover publications is re-releasing this book later in 2014)

2. Bertsimas, Introduction to Linear Optimization. Very nice modern treatment that uses linear algebra and ideas from
convex geometry. Modern interior point methods are also covered. Senior level undergraduate level.

3. Matousek and Gartner, Understanding and Using Linear Programming. Nice modern linear algebra based treatment with also covers modern interior point
methods. The authors actually have a sense of humor and this is a good first book if you have a solid linear algebra background.

4. Hadley, Linear Programming. This oldie but goodie was written in the early 1960's and presents a solid geometric treatment that
covers all the required background linear algebra.

5. Kwon, Introduction to Linear Optimization. This is a new well-written short/compact treatment that emphasizes MATLAB.

After reading Sultan to get the main geometric idea of what is going on, I feel that the best way to
understand LP is by
utilizing linear algebra which all the books listed above do. In my opinion, the matrix
approach takes the mystery out of the simplex tableau.

I should also mention that Gilbert Strang has a nice chapter on LP in his
book Linear Algebra and its Applications, 3rd Edition.

Grade 2-6-The touching story of a terminally ill girl is recreated in this audio version of the book by Eleanor Coerr (Puffin, 1977). Based on the true story of a young Japanese girl who contracts leukemia as a result of the atom bomb that was dropped on Hiroshima, the story follows Sadako as a healthy schoolgirl winning relay races, through her diagnosis with the atom bomb sickness, to her long stay in the hospital. It is in the hospital that she first begins making origami cranes to pass the time. Her ultimate goal is to make 1000, but she dies with only 644 completed. Sadako's classmates finish making the remaining cranes, and all 1000 are buried with her. Read by Christina Moore, the recording has excellent narration and sound quality and is particularly notable for the children's voices. Moore uses subtle nuances to distinguish between characters, and conveys a sense of Sadako's gentle spirit and courage. The recording is further enriched at the end by an interesting biography of Eleanor Coerr that explains how the author came to write Sadako's story. Schools and public libraries will benefit from adding this recording to their collections.

Chizuko came to visit her friend Sadako in the hospital. She had a piece of gold paper that she had cut into a large square.

"Watch!" she said, and she folded the paper over and over, and it turned into a beautiful crane.

"If a sick person folds one thousand paper cranes," Chizuko said, "the gods will grant her wish and make her well again."

Sadako Sasaki was only twelve years old when she died. She was two when an atom bomb was dropped on the city of Hiroshima in Japan, where she lived with her family. Ten years later, she had leukemia as a result of radiation from the bomb.

Sadako had folded six hundred and forty-four cranes. The flock hung above her bed on strings. Her classmates folded the rest.

Today Sadako is a heroine to the children of Japan, who visit her memorial in Hiroshima Peace Park to leave the paper cranes they make in her honor.

Touching Japanese story well told. Convincing message for those of us campaigning for a nuclear-weapon free world. How long do we hang on with hope? Paper cranes are amazing in themselves. Wonderful to watch anyone who knows how to make them.

Just get this book and read it. Then read it to your children and grandchildren.

About the Author

Joan Chittister is an internationally known author and lecturer, and the executive director of Benetvision: A Resource and Research Center for Contemporary Spirituality. She is past president of the Conference of American Benedictine Prioresses and the Leadership Conference of Women Religious. Her books include The Friendship of Women, In the Heart of the Temple, and The Rule of Benedict. She lives in Erie, Pennsylvania.

Best Book I've Read on Aging Gracefully

In my mid-forties, I'm committed to aging well. I've seen how so many in our culture age, and I'm committed to do better, not just physically, but emotionally, as well. For me, a big part of that shift is ensuring that my mind-space is in a good place, and that largely translates (again, for me) into not trying to chase the fountain of youth, but rather, for celebrating the gift of years, and for being my best self at this given moment in my life history, wherever that may be. This book? Is such a gift in that respect. I've read a number of books on aging now, and this has been one of the most beautifully insightful, in fact, I had initially borrowed it from the library, but wound up purchasing it as I very much want to underline and make margin notes, as I'm sure I will refer to it time and again. I highly recommend this lovely, poignant work, that also happens to be wonderfully written.

The Gift of Years: Growing Older Gracefully by Joan Chitister is a hopeful commentary on the thoughts of well-known people and s few saints who ponder what it means to grow old in an environment such as the USA where youth is most valued and catered to in the creation and sales of various items. Older folk are not considered a good market for sales and are not considered in material goods being offered to the public The author also shares her own thoughts of growing older. Turning 70 was the starting point when she began to see changes in her energy and interests. The importance of meditation is expressed. A gpod, all around book for those in search of a spiritual, thoughtful old age.

This should be required reading for anyone approaching the golden years of life!

Joan Chittester writes so clearly there leaves no doubt this is not theory on her part. She has lived
some of it already, knows elders who've told their story or whom she has observed, and has researched
the topic carefully. The wisdom with which she builds her case is both down-to-earth and accessible to
elders of all backgrounds - and professionally researched, giving teeth and credibility. The way the book
is divided into short chapters on given topics, allows the reader to take on the topic in small pieces, the
way you would eat a course of a meal and allow time to digest it before going on. Through the lenses of the
different topics, the main points are shown to be relevant any way you look at them. This book is a "must
read" for all people advancing in years or who have loved ones who are. It should be required reading for
anyone entering the "young old" (65-74) years as Joan describes them. The best part is that she's writing for
herself too, and her work couldn't be more credible. Don't wait. Order this book today. "The Gift of Years"
will be the best gift you could give yourself if your desire is to live a vibrant, meaningful last chapter of
life.
