About the Author
Bruce D. Clayton, PhD,�has studied the art of karate since 1973. He holds a seventh-degree black belt in Shotokan karate and he is the creator of Jein Do, a self-defense course for young women. He is the author of the Black Medicine series, Fallout Survival, Life After Doomsday, Life After Terrorism, and Thinking About Survival. He has appeared on 60 Minutes, the CBS Evening News, Today, and the Tomorrow Show. He lives in Yosemite, California.

A Complete Game-Changer

This is NOT a book on how to position your hands and feet to "do the kata"; there are plenty of those and they don't know WHY. This is a book on WHY we do the moves we do, and how they work.
It starts with the history, the situation, and the players. What were they trying to accomplish? Digging through the historical records (largely covered in the original edition). What did they originally come up with? A tremendous amount of Karate "archeology", digging through the kata in old films, other styles, putting it together - you can see the PhD researcher was here. But why that collection of moves?
This is the Game-Changing breakthrough of the Expanded Edition. The Kata are not a random set of vaguely related moves, a dance around the floor practicing general moves. They are a TACTICAL lesson and a drill of moves for a SPECIFIC type of opponent. How to defeat a sword-wielding samurai bureaucrat (Pinan Shodan) or a fully armored samurai warrior (Pinan Yondan) with your empty hands and skill.
In the process, we also realize why Pinan Shodan, a much harder kata, was taught before Pinan Nidan - it was more important to know. Funakoshi's situation was different, so he changed the order with Heian Shodan and Heian Nidan, for teaching reasons rather than tactical reasons. Truly scientific research requires this sort of unexpected findings.
So the world of Shotokan Kata has changed. Kata are our textbook and our workbook, but they are no longer just a catalog of moves. Each is a specific lesson on the moves and methods to defeat a specific enemy. If you don't know the enemy and why we are fighting him in precisely this fashion, you don't know the kata. And "Train harder" is no longer that answer.

A "must have" for every Shotokan practitioner

I have been involved in Shotokan Karate for 46 years. I have taught thousands of students, and because I am a voracious reader and student, would have told you I knew a great deal about Shotokan Karate. This book proved me wrong. Oh sure, I knew the stories we are all told, but those stories are just passed along as gospel from one person to another. Author Bruce Clayton did the research himself, even teaching himself to read the Japanese characters.

This book will open your mind in a way in which NO KARATE BOOK ANYWHERE can. You think you know the origin of your art? Guess again! You think you know the applications of your Kata? Wrong again! You think you know the place of Gichin Funakoshi to your art. Wait until you read the truth!

Students of Shotokan are used to participating in NO CONTACT tournaments. We are told that Karate is too dangerous to allow hitting. In fact the rules of a match say that if you gain one full point, you win, because that one point would have killed an opponent. Like me, I'll bet you laughed at that idea. Wait until you read this book before you laugh again!!

This book belongs in the collection of any serious student of Shotokan Karate, and since Shotokan is the source of so many other styles, I can say beyond a doubt that practitioners of any style of karate will love this book.

I couldn't recommend this book highly enough. By all means buy this book!

Extremely well researched

Bruce Clayton is obviously a well schooled martial artist...but more than that, after reading "Shotokan's Secret", it is apparent that he is also a wonderful scholar.

This book is a must read for all hardstyle martial artists or for those just interested in the development of martial arts. Dr. Clayton manages to adroitly slip the veil of martial arts pseudo-history/legend (a herculean task for those raised on the legends) and writes an extremely well researched exposition of why Karate (particularly Shuri-te) is the way it is.

Karate has been long espoused as a "Civil" art rather than a martial art. In other words, an art that was developed by peasants for defense against Samurai. Dr. Clayton, proves that in fact Shuri-te was developed by amazing warriors, willing to face guns, knives and swords with nothing but their bare hands. Shuri-te was not designe for "self"-defense or for fighting one opponent, but as a brutally devastating form of hand to hand combat, designed to defeat multiple, armed warriors from obducting, harming or killing their King. In truth, Clayton makes the claim that it was a bodyguard art.

His description of what he calls "The Shuri Crucible" is fascinating and extremely well documented. Not only does it explain the development of the style, but also explains why a Karate Dojo is as it is.

This book is a wonderful piece of well reasoned, researched history for anyone interested in the origins of Karate or anyone interested in understanding how any martial develops.

Hong Zhang is Associate Professor of Computer Science at Armstrong Atlantic State University. His research interests include bioinformatics, medical computing, computer graphics, and image processing. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Pittsburgh. Dr. Y. Daniel Liang is Yamacraw Professor of Software Engineering at Armstrong Atlantic State University. His Prentice Hall books include Introduction to Java Programming and Introduction to C++ Programming. Liang holds a Ph.D. from the University of Oklahoma.

A very good book on computer graphics principles

One of the authors has written several books on Java that were very good, so I was expecting something more than I have been seeing with academic-oriented computer graphics textbooks. So far, I have been quite pleased. The book does a good job of combining the teaching of computer graphics principles with enough of the fundamentals of programming in the Java 2D and Java 3D APIs to make the reader competent in being able to transfer his/her knowledge to other graphics APIs. However, there is just enough of the Java graphical APIs shown to establish basic competency in programming with them, so if what you are really seeking is great ability in Java 2D or Java 3D you should look for other sources of information. There are lots of Java programs demonstrating graphics principles included, just not a detailed explanation of the APIs involved. The only chapter that is a little off is the last one on additional 3D topics. I'm not sure why a section on sound was included in a text on graphics, other than because Java 3D has a sound engine, although it has always proved somewhat unreliable. This book has lots of good examples. I found the explanations helpful and thought the progression of thought from topic to topic was easy to follow. This is one of the better java3d books that I've seen.

Chapter One What’s Wrong with Me? I could take you back to the very place where I lost my faith in God. I was 14 years old. At Prospect High School in Mount Prospect, Illinois, the biology classroom was on the third floor in the northwest corner of the building. I was sitting in the second row from the windows, third chair from the front, when I first learned about Darwin’s theory of evolution. Revolutionized by Evolution This was revolutionary to me! Our teacher explained that life originated millions of years ago when chemicals randomly reacted with each other in a warm ocean on the primordial earth. Then, through a process of survival of the fittest and natural selection, life forms gained in complexity. Eventually, human beings emerged from the same family tree as apes. Although the teacher didn’t address this aspect of evolution, its biggest implication was obvious to me: If evolution explains the origin and development of life, then God was out of a job! What did we need God for? Life was just the natural result of the random interaction of chemicals. To my mind, this was great news! Finally, here was a rational basis for atheism. If evolution explains life, then the first chapters of the Bible must be mythology or wishful thinking. And if that were true of the first chapters, why not the rest? Jesus could not have been God. Miracles aren’t possible; they’re just the attempts by pre-scientific people to make sense out of what they couldn’t understand but which now science can explain. For the first time, I had a rational reason to abandon Christianity. Bored by Religion Not that I’d ever really been a Christian. My parents believed in God and had done their best to try to spark spiritual interest in me. When I was a kid, they brought me to a Protestant church, where I would struggle to stay awake during the 20-minute sermons. I didn’t understand the rituals, I couldn’t relate to the organ music, and I quickly concluded that religion was a waste of an otherwise perfectly good Sunday. When I was in junior high, my parents enrolled me in confirmation class. This meant that one day a week after school I was forced to sit in the church’s airless basement and go through a series of classes. I can’t recall learning much about the Bible—or about Jesus, for that matter. Mostly, I remember having to memorize things like the Ten Commandments and then stand and recite them. Nobody knew them well; we sort of bluffed our way through as the pastor would prompt us. It was mind-numbingly dull. I don’t remember anything that I was forced to commit to memory back then, although I do have vivid memories of the pastor lecturing us and telling us sternly that we didn’t have enough "diligence." I didn’t even know what that was, but apparently we were bad for not having it. Graduating from Church When the time came to be formally confirmed and made a member of the church, we were told in advance the kind of questions we would be asked so that we’d know the answers. I didn’t want to go through with this because, if I had any faith in God at the time, it was hanging by a slender thread. To me, God was irrelevant, mysterious, and a stern disciplinarian who, if he existed, was probably mad that I lacked "diligence." On the other hand, I wasn’t too excited about the idea of standing up to my parents and saying, "No thanks, I’m not interested in being confirmed, because I think your God is probably just a fairy tale." My dad would have gone ballistic and my mom would have freaked out. I didn’t need that. If there were no God, then what would be the harm in going through some meaningless ritual? So I went through the confirmation ceremony. Afterward, we got a stack of pre-printed envelopes so we could give money to the church. That, I figured, was probably what was really behind the whole confirmation scam—and probably behind all of organized religion. But confirmation had its advantages: I figured that my confirmation ceremony was actually my graduation ceremony—I had graduated from church. Now I was on my own. My parents stopped dragging me to church on Sundays, and I was happy to sleep late. I had done the religion drill. Time to party! Looking for Love After that day in biology class, I had even more reason to party. After all, I’d figured out that God did not exist. And that meant I was not accountable to him. I would not have to stand before him someday and be judged. I was free to live according to my rules, not his dusty commandments that I had been force-fed in confirmation class. To me, all of this meant that nobody else really mattered unless they made me happy. But there was someone who mattered—and who made me happy. Her name was Leslie, and we met when we were 14 years old. On the day we met, Leslie went home and told her mother, "I’ve met the boy I’m going to marry!" Her mother was condescending. "Sure, you did," she said. But Leslie didn’t have any doubts, and neither did I. We dated on and off during high school, and after I left home to attend the University of Missouri, we maintained our relationship through the mail. We became convinced that there was nobody else we would ever be happy with. Within a year, Leslie moved down to Missouri, and we got engaged. We decided to get married in a church because ... well, that’s where people get married, isn’t it? Besides, Leslie wasn’t hostile toward God, as I was. She wasn’t opposed to religion, especially for other people. For herself, though, God was just another topic she had never taken the time to seriously explore.

An excellent primer on Apologetics

This book is an excellent primer on Christian Apologetics; that is, it is a basic introduction to Apologetics. It is not the "be-all, end-all" in the debate about Christ or the Bible, but it is a good starting point, and I think that is what the author intended. It presents some fundamental arguments for Christ and the Bible, and gives a good basic defense for them. This may be all that is needed for a lot of Christians, perhaps even most, and it lays a good foundation for young believers.

For those who wish to go beyond the basics, I would recommend that you consider looking at "Evidence That Demands a Verdict" by Josh McDowell or the writings of Dr. Norman Geisler.

About the Author

Jay B. Barney is Bank Chair in Corporate Strategy at the Fisher College of Business at Ohio State University. He received his Ph.D. from Yale, and has held faculty appointments at UCLA and Texas A&M. Jay has published more than 40 articles in several journals including AMR, AMJ, and AME; has served on the editorial boards of AMR, SMJ, The Human Resource Management Journal, and Organizational Science; and has also served as an Associate Editor at The Journal of Management, Senior Editor at Organization Science, and Special Issue Editor at SMJ. In 1992, he won the College of Business Research Award at Texas A&M, and in 1997 was awarded an Honorary Doctorate from Lund University (in Lund, Sweden). Jay teaches Business Policy and Strategy, and has taught in executive programs at UCLA, Texas A&M, Ohio State, Michigan, SMU, TCU, and Bocconi University (in Milan, Italy). He has won teaching awards at UCLA (1983), Texas A&M (1992), and Ohio State (1996, 1997, and 1999), and has consulted with more than 20 firms around the world, including Hewlett-Packard, Texas Instruments, and Arco. In 1989, Jay was elected to the BPS Executive Committee. Later was elected the Committee's Assistant Program Chair, and subsequently served as Program Chair, Chair Elect, and Chair of the BPS Division. He completed his service at the Past Chair of the Division in 1997.

Well Explained Concepts

The author writes in a way that explains the corporate concepts in a real-world fashion. As an operations manager I have been exposed to the concepts the book describes without understanding how much I truly understood. Barney's explanations tied the business concept to the job knowledge and left me with a clear and expanded view of the company and why the company makes the decisions it does. This is a superior product to what other similar strategy textbooks have provided me. The theory was there, but the emphasis was on big words not on complete real-world understanding. I strongly recommend this book for those who are studying strategic management and competitive advantage. I also strongly recommend finding second-hand copy here on Amazon as it was an excellent value and it delivered ahead of schedule.

If you need a book on competitive advantage this is a very good one to have. It gives a different perspective than other strategy books and breaks down the analysis into individual steps.
The style of writing does get a little technical and it's not always clear what to do with the information given. Perhaps that is just my limitation in reading ability.

PERSPECTIVE IS EVERYTHING

This is a great book - more for what it organises than what it adds as new ideas.
Barney sets a model for Competitive Advantage (VIRO) and them compares strategic models as potential sources. It places many of the modern attempts in perspective. Without this starting understanding, the modern gurus (Hamel) are almost impossible to apply as their ideas lack the perspective on the role of strategy within an organisation and within all of the other management tools.
It places Michael Porter within a framework where his work can be better used.
For managers and post graduates, this book sets out the fundamentals of strategy and where it can take you.
Not cheap (by a long way) but a fair price for the knowledge.

The best Buddhist introduction I have found

This book is exactly what its title suggests - a quick paced introduction to Buddhism for people who have busy lives.

The author was living in the corporate world, and ended up stumbling into Buddhism.

His story is inspiring, and subtly weaves the core Buddhist teachings into the story. The way this is done makes the teachings very accessible and relevant to Western people, especially those with similar issues of living in the corporate rat-race.

It is fair to say that this book has changed my life, it has led me to read many other texts, but I still return to this one from time to time for a re-charge.

I would recommend this without reservation to anyone with the vaguest interest in Buddhism, and also anyone who feels there must be more to life than what they are currently experiencing.

Loving David Michie

I got this for a foundational understanding of Buddhism and was led to David by his fiction works "The DL's Cat" and it's sequel "The Art of Purring" - (and am now wishing and waiting for the next installment of this WONDERFUL story!). David has a fantastic way of explaining how even the most basic precepts of Buddhism can fit into anyone's life. This delightful narrative not only underscores what most have no clue about, he also gives the day to day application of the principles. In essence it is not so much a religion (as misleading as the 'ism' is at the end of the name) as a philosophy of life. Even the Dali Lama himself has said, you don't need to become a Buddhist to use and apply what you learn that appeals to you, speaks to your soul. David takes this step further by using everyday examples, traffic, rude people, the never ending rise of annoyance that is a part of almost every life. He teaches simple tools and applications for everyday life (hence the title!). You don't have to 'contemplate your navel' to understand the principles of Buddhism, but learning how to meditate is a core instruction. One which can lower your blood pressure, reduce your cortisol levels, raise your happiness and patience and extend your life. This is a book that should be read by every human being in every country. I have purchased the audio as I listen to it daily to keep the information and application fresh. This man is one of the greatest gifts - he speaks beautifully, describes simply and relates completely the essence of Buddhism and it's applications to every busy life, including yours. Don't wait another day, buy this book or the audio CD and find peace and purpose in your life. And as a PS, this has NOTHING to do with your own religion. There are millions of Christians (myself included), Lutherans, Jews, Hindu's, Protestants, etc who find their faith deepened, enriched and expanded as a result of these teachings. Jesus went missing for many years and showed up at 30....who's to say that He and Buddha didn't hang for a few years...? I picture a table with all of these prophets/teachers discussing how best to reach every heart in the world with the ultimate and unarguable message of "love one another, you are ALL my children". That's what Buddhism for Busy People is all about, helping you to be the very best you possible. This needs to be on your 'must read and live' list. If everyone did read it and apply it to their lives, we'd instantly have a better world. Instantly.

Fantastic book on Buddhism

This book is really fantastic. I picked it up at my local monastery and got several more copies for friends. I highly recommend this book for those interested in learning more about Buddhism as well as practitioners who want a fresh viewpoint and a fun read.
