'Globalization' has become one of the defining buzzwords of our time - a term that describes a variety of accelerating economic, political, cultural, ideological, and environmental processes that are rapidly altering our experience of the world. It is by its nature a dynamic topic - and this Very Short Introduction has been fully updated for a third edition, to include recent developments in global politics, the global economy, and environmental issues.

Presenting globalization in accessible language as a multifaceted process encompassing global, regional, and local aspects of social life, Manfred B. Steger looks at its causes and effects, examines whether it is a new phenomenon, and explores the question of whether, ultimately, globalization is a good or a bad thing.

Manfred Steger's concise examination of globalization - updated May 2013 edition
By The Guardian
This slim 137-page volume is penned by Manfred Steger, Professor of Political Science at the University of Hawaii and author of more than 20 books on the subject of globalization. He's also Research Leader of the Globalization and Culture Program at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, where he's Professor of Global Studies. The book was updated and revised in May 2013.

With these impeccable academic credentials, the author knows his stuff and manages to condense this vast subject down to 8 succinct chapters each focusing on a different aspect of the subject: the economic, political, cultural, ecological and (perhaps the most interesting chapter) ideological dimensions of the process.

In an early chapter Steger defines some common terms used in the debate and outlines the argument that `globalization' is not really a new phenomenon but can be seen as part of a gradual process over the past 10,000 years, whereby ideas born in one part of the world (the invention of the wheel or of writing, for example) have over time been adopted by neighbouring societies and become at least widespread, even though their adoption might be prevented from becoming truly `global' by the geographical remoteness of some regions. The perception of globalization as a uniquely modern phenomenon born of the age of passenger-air travel and global electronic communications is flawed, claims Steger: it is more useful to see the current phase of an increasingly interconnected world as just the latest in an inevitable process.

Where Steger's essay really scores is in its analysis of different types of globalism: `market globalism' focuses on the economic imperatives to make everyone increasingly affluent `consumers' sharing similar western-derived cultural values; `justice globalism' constructs a vision of globalization based on egalitarian ideals and distributive justice - the International Court of Justice or the UN Declaration of Human Rights, for example - and `religious globalism' as promoted for example by the Islamic Jihadists, who seek the establishment of a global caliphate founded on a fundamentalist interpretation of Islam. There's also an interesting analysis of the rhetorical maneuvers performed by nationalist-populist reactionaries against these ubiquitous trends, who seek to promote the survival of the now largely redundant nation state concept, founded on territorial boundaries destined to be swept away for ever by the new paradigm of unitary global values and supra-national legal structures.

The book contains many monochrome illustrations, graphs and charts (for example per capita CO2 emissions, or global internet users as a % of the population by region) and overall it's hard to see how the content and organization of this short book might have been improved. The only caution is that as a university academic Steger's writing style is rather dry, so those seeking a more racy and engaging narrative might be best advised to look elsewhere.

Very interesting read
By Sussman
This rather slim addition carries a `weighty topic' rather well. The author Mr Steger, the author is an eminent Professor of Global Studies at Melbourne Institute of Technology and he talks about how term came into being. As Mr Steger comments, a growing number of academics and political, commentators invoked the term to describe a number of changing parameters in economics ideological, ecological, cultural and political frames works. These aspects that have in recent decades be seen more than from the perspective of one nation's view point but rather as a global concern. What we get in this well thought-out and readable book is Mr Manfred Steger's multifaceted development encapsulating global, regional, and local aspects of social life, in addition to explaining the various magnitudes of globalization. The book is neatly divided into sections explain one theme and or the other, and yes there is a plethora of `jargon' in the mix, so keeping a dictionary to hand maybe a good idea. However, what comes to the fore is Steger's premise that `Globalization' is not necessarily a modern age phenomenon but rather as old as the ability human beings have had for putting their thoughts into the `written word'. For me this was both a thought provoking and somewhat enlightening read.

uncharacteristically disappointing
By T. Stilwell
I have read several Oxford University Very Short Introduction books. This one was interesting but also disappointing as it was too brief and unnecessarily biased without supporting data.

Unlike Joseph Stiglitz or Thomas Friedman, this author defines globalization beyond economic forces briefly summarizing economic, political, cultural, ecological and idealogical impacts of globalization. He identifies why these forces are important but lack equal impact or value. Oddly, he overlooks technology and the rapid pace of change. Sometimes he provides supportive examples and references. Too often, he makes unsubstantiated socialist rants never supported with examples or references. The sudden change in writing style is abrupt and difficult to overlook. Lastly, he fluffs nearly a third of the book highlighting a WTO protest in Seattle (inconsequential) and the War on Terror because of 9/11 (impact to banking felt world-wide yet undiscussed).

Although the author is clearly well-read, his work reads like an amateur that has limited travel to high society regions of English-speaking countries. He has limited understanding of life beyond a post industrialist democratic society that encourages free trade, education and scientific thinking. While he shares these values and would willingly promote democracy as an export, he also has a naive hippie agenda that claims we would all work really well together if only the bad capitalists were forced to behave. I doubt he has even chatted with citizens of developing countries (language barrier) in order to learn their point of view or view of themselves in history. He ignores what their recent opportunities were and how things have changed with the influx of foreign capital, supply chain extensions and free trade in the world trade network (1.5B newly employed). He naively assumes that they embrace all things Western without criticism and thus lose their national identity. While he admits that charity from modern civilizations to backward civilizations often fails because those in power (developing nations) usually redirect funds to their personal bank accounts, he neglects cultural norms that expect and reward that behavior. Rather than punish said leaders by freezing assets hidden in overseas bank accounts, extracting them for trial and punishment (Manuel Noriega), he prefers letting them keep their loot with the World Bank and IMF taking the fall by forgiving all debts and allowing such developing countries to simply rinse and repeat. He also has an irrational sense of global equality unsupported with equal norms in terms of standard-of-living, education, treatment of the environment, approach to dealing with disagreements or perceived injustice or expectations when working to earn a fair day's wage. If a developing country doesn't see fit to adopt modern boundaries for trashing the environment or educating labor or exploiting labor, should its citizens be cut off from world trade, be pressured with cultural change to adopt world standards or merely tolerated despite socialist whining about exploitation? He neglects to offer an opinion.

He identified a rise in NGOs and regional or global organizations but cherry-picked the ones to cheer for. Oddly, there is no mention of the WHO extending average life expectancy with vaccination and improved prenatal care or the Peace Corp providing disaster relief, free education, improved farming and husbandry, or distribution of medicine.

The author ignores evidence like world wars and genocides that strongly imply that nations allowed to each go their separate ways hasn't ended well for their citizens or strangers that they meet. He feels that GATT, The Hague, WTO and G20 exist solely to force "unlimited accumulation and consumption of material things" to all disguised as free markets and democracy. He also ignores freedom of choice with multiple rants against the supposed Americanization of other cultures cherry-picking examples of successful adoption of new ideas, products and services by foreign markets conveniently overlooking all failed attempts (India McDonald's frying potatoes in pork fat) or protectionist legislation to shield the creation of domestic competition (Chinese automotive or internet market segments). He also claims prejudice when countries invoke immigration quotas and ignores contributing factors (recession, illegal border crossing).

I honestly don't understand his White Guilt for the supposedly oppressed Southern hemisphere that he repeatedly hinted at but never substantiated in any detail. Southern nations are free to choose any form of government and free to trade with the world economy or not. If they choose poorly, are Western nations or businesses really exploiting them or simply allowing them to behave foolishly? If the same behavior occurs when trading or borrowing money from China or Japan, is it still exploitation? The UK borrowed heavily from the US to fund WWII and faithfully paid them back over 40 years. Why should developing countries be given a free ride?

I would have enjoyed it more had he attempted to address some of the obvious outcomes of globalization such as
1) redistribution of jobs across national borders in order to reduce costs. while this reduces costs for existing products and services, those who lose jobs must retrain and may be unable to rehire at the same earning power impacting their way of live and sense of happiness and success. are citizens that must repeatedly change careers still considered successful if they reboot themselves or only if they reboot themselves and continue to increase earning power? if market forces move your preferred career choice outside your nation, do you emigrate as so many others do in order to complete tertiary education? does your government owe you job security or should they merely not sweeten the pot for your employer by offering a tax break for outsourcing your job? do your ties to a community (home owner, married with children, employed by primary conomic driver of the region) matter as you lose your job and are forced to retrain? should your government help you retrain or should you expect it periodically and budget for it? if your government and culture do not provide career opportunities of interest, is it fair for you to seek new opportunity through emigration or are you disloyal? If you are unable to get rehired, are you an unfair social burden to the community or just unlucky but unwilling to migrate because the emotional cost (loss of access to family, friends) is too high?
2) free flow of capital across national borders can cause economic recessions. While the global financial crisis is in recent memory due to failures of due diligence by watchdogs, analysts, mortgage lenders and financial institutions, it has occurred previously during the collapse of the Soviet Union and the Asian Financial Crisis. Modern businesses with most funds invested may suddenly be unable to make payroll causing a chain effect. Should governments impose minimal behavior rules for businesses and financial institutions or allow free market to reign? Should government plan bailout strategies or is that merely encouraging future bad behavior?
3) national sovereignty now conflicts with global responsibility. Is it wrong for more powerful nations to step in and stop a genocide, civil war or war because it interferes with free trade and single source supply chains? Should governments impose minimal compliance standards for businesses to avoid negative impacts to the environment or are developing countries allowed to pollute just because they are poor?

No Wall Too High: A real David and Goliath story, by Len Frier

In 1970 Congress created OSHA "to ensure that every man and woman in the nation had safe and healthy working conditions." This act had the side effect of limiting the approval of all electrical, electronic and electro-medial devices sold in the United Statges. Leonard Frier, founder and owner of an independent electrical testing laboratory, was determined to have the right to compete in this marketplace. Unfortunately, Underwriters Laboratories (UL) continued to be the only business inspectors would accept laboratory tests from. Leonard knew that his dream of becoming a competitor should be attainable, and he fought a fifteen-year battle for that dream to become a reality. It was Leonard's fighting nature that allowed him to successfully navigate the onerous justice system and come out on top. No Wall Too High candidly discusses the struggle of one individual to achieve the American dream.

A Must Read for Start Ups
By G. Dash
This is a must read for anyone who has started a company and finds governmental regulations or standards barring their way. Just as the author found out, you may have to sue the government to get justice. It is not an impossible task. Why are things that way? There are two elements that preserve unreasonable regulations: lobbying by large corporations who want to suppress competition and governmental inertia. It's that latter that is the most disturbing. You may, in fact, find the rank and file within the governmental agency sympathetic to your cause, but that is different than doing something about it. Fortunately, judges generally do understand these situations and once you get in front of them can dispense justice quickly. In the author's case, though, he had sue twice. Governmental inertia can be a formidable thing. So if you find your way in business blocked by regulation, use this book as your guide, and go seek justice.

Optimal Control Theory: Applications to Management Science and Economics, by Suresh P. Sethi, Gerald L. Thompson

Optimal control methods are used to determine optimal ways to control a dynamic system. The theoretical work in this field serves as a foundation for the book, which the authors have applied to business management problems developed from their research and classroom instruction.

Sethi and Thompson have provided management science and economics communities with a thoroughly revised edition of their classic text on Optimal Control Theory. The new edition has been completely refined with careful attention to the text and graphic material presentation. Chapters cover a range of topics including finance, production and inventory problems, marketing problems, machine maintenance and replacement, problems of optimal consumption of natural resources, and applications of control theory to economics. The book contains new results that were not available when the first edition was published, as well as an expansion of the material on stochastic optimal control theory.

Review
`Like the first edition, Sethi and Thompson's revised textbook advances the state of the art of operations research and management science on multiple dimensions. The authors provide a rigorous treatment of a powerful methodology. They demonstrate the deep managerial insights to be obtained in a variety of management and economics domains. The book facilitates learning in the classroom and encourages readers' creativity. The clarity in exposition makes the book accessible to diverse readers, including mathematicians interested in learning about applications and researchers in various application domains interested in developing new managerial results. This is a very good textbook for subjects on optimal controls with management science applications. I have adopted this as a textbook and the students love it. Illustrative figures and diagrams are sufficiently provided, and materials are carefully explained. The use of the commonly available Excel program to solve TPBVPs at the end of chapter 2 is suitable for the ever increasing demand of "multimedia teaching". I have not seen any other optimal control textbook include such a set of Excel instructions in such a simple and elegant way. Moreover, the authors made a set of chapter-by-chapter Power Point files available on the web to supplement the textbook for classroom teaching. I'd give 5 stars to this book anytime.' Technical Paper Rollup
By Amazon Customer
Book is essentially a compendium of technical papers on specific economics topics subject to the application of Control Theory. The book includes a robust set of useful state equations and associated optimality problem statements, but I would have appreciated a more general discussion of the application of control theory to management science that ties all of the book's subjects together into a single, cohesive framework. The book focuses almost exclusively on the trees rather than the forest. As such, it is best suited as a supplement for graduate-level studies.

Ready Player One, by Ernest Cline

At once wildly original and stuffed with irresistible nostalgia, READY PLAYER ONE is a spectacularly genre-busting, ambitious, and charming debut—part quest novel, part love story, and part virtual space opera set in a universe where spell-slinging mages battle giant Japanese robots, entire planets are inspired by Blade Runner, and flying DeLoreans achieve light speed.

It’s the year 2044, and the real world is an ugly place.

Like most of humanity, Wade Watts escapes his grim surroundings by spending his waking hours jacked into the OASIS, a sprawling virtual utopia that lets you be anything you want to be, a place where you can live and play and fall in love on any of ten thousand planets.

And like most of humanity, Wade dreams of being the one to discover the ultimate lottery ticket that lies concealed within this virtual world. For somewhere inside this giant networked playground, OASIS creator James Halliday has hidden a series of fiendish puzzles that will yield massive fortune—and remarkable power—to whoever can unlock them.

For years, millions have struggled fruitlessly to attain this prize, knowing only that Halliday’s riddles are based in the pop culture he loved—that of the late twentieth century. And for years, millions have found in this quest another means of escape, retreating into happy, obsessive study of Halliday’s icons. Like many of his contemporaries, Wade is as comfortable debating the finer points of John Hughes’s oeuvre, playing Pac-Man, or reciting Devo lyrics as he is scrounging power to run his OASIS rig.

And then Wade stumbles upon the first puzzle.

Suddenly the whole world is watching, and thousands of competitors join the hunt—among them certain powerful players who are willing to commit very real murder to beat Wade to this prize. Now the only way for Wade to survive and preserve everything he knows is to win. But to do so, he may have to leave behind his oh-so-perfect virtual existence and face up to life—and love—in the real world he’s always been so desperate to escape.

A world at stake.
A quest for the ultimate prize.

Amazon.com Review

Amazon Best Books of the Month, August 2011: Ready Player One takes place in the not-so-distant future--the world has turned into a very bleak place, but luckily there is OASIS, a virtual reality world that is a vast online utopia. People can plug into OASIS to play, go to school, earn money, and even meet other people (or at least they can meet their avatars), and for protagonist Wade Watts it certainly beats passing the time in his grim, poverty-stricken real life. Along with millions of other world-wide citizens, Wade dreams of finding three keys left behind by James Halliday, the now-deceased creator of OASIS and the richest man to have ever lived. The keys are rumored to be hidden inside OASIS, and whoever finds them will inherit Halliday’s fortune. But Halliday has not made it easy. And there are real dangers in this virtual world. Stuffed to the gills with action, puzzles, nerdy romance, and 80s nostalgia, this high energy cyber-quest will make geeks everywhere feel like they were separated at birth from author Ernest Cline.--Chris Schluep

Guest Reviewer: Daniel H. Wilson on Ready Player One by Earnest Cline
Daniel H. Wilson is the New York Times best-selling author of Robopocalypse.

I dare you not to fall in love with Ready Player One. And I mean head over heels in love--the way you fall for someone who is smart, feisty, and who can effortlessly finish your favorite movie lines, music lyrics, or literature quotes before they come out of your mouth.

Ready Player One expertly mines a copious vein of 1980s pop culture, catapulting the reader on a light-speed adventure in an advanced but backward-looking future.

The story is set in a near-term future in which the new, new form of the Internet is a realistic virtual multi-verse called the OASIS. Most human interaction takes place via goggles and gloves in millions of unique worlds, including the boring (and free) “public education” world from which our teenage protagonist must escape.

Our unlikely hero is an overweight trailer park kid who goes by Wade Watts in real life, and “Parzival” to his best friends and mortal enemies--all of whom he interacts with virtually. Just like the Arthurian knight that is his namesake, young Wade is on a quest for an incredible treasure guarded by mythical creatures. Specifically, the creator of the OASIS and richest man on the planet, James Halliday, stipulated in his will that his fortune be given to the first person who can find an “Easter egg” hidden somewhere in the OASIS. The catch? Every devilishly complex clue on this treasure hunt is rooted in an intimate knowledge of 1980s pop culture.

This leaves the people of the future hilariously obsessed with every aspect of the 1980s. The setup is particularly brilliant, because Ernie Cline seems to have a laser-beam knowledge of (and warm, fuzzy love for) every pop song, arcade game, and giant robot produced in the last thirty years. Seriously, this is a guy who owns and regularly drives a 1982 DeLorean that has been mocked up to look exactly like the time-traveling car in Back to the Future, complete with a glowing flux capacitor.

But Ready Player One isn’t just a fanboy’s wet dream. Real villains are lurking, threatening our hero with death in their ruthless hunt for the treasure. Worse, these corporate baddies are posers with no love for the game – they have movie dialogue piped in via radio earpieces, use bots to cheat at arcade games like JOUST, and don’t hesitate to terrorize or murder people in the real world to achieve their aims inside the OASIS.

As the book climaxes, a mega-battle unfolds with sobering life-or-death stakes, yet soldiered entirely by exciting and downright fun pop-culture icons. The bad guys are piloting a ferocious Mechagodzilla. Our good guy has to leave his X-Wing fighter aboard his private flotilla so that he can pilot an authentic Ultraman recreation. And how do you not grin when someone dons a pair of virtual Chuck Taylor All Stars that bestow the power of flight?

Cline is fearless and he lets his imagination soar, yet this pop scenery could easily come off as so much fluff. Instead, Cline keeps the stakes high throughout, and the epic treasure hunt structure (complete with an evolving high-score list) keeps the action intense. The plot unfolds with constant acceleration, never slowing down or sagging in the middle, to create a thrilling ride with a fulfilling ending.

Best of all, the book captures the aura of the manifold worlds it depicts. If Ready Player One were a living room, it would be wood-panelled. If it were shoes, it would be high-tops. And if it were a song, well, it would have to be Eye of the Tiger.

I really, really loved it.

-- Daniel H. Wilson

Questions for Ernest Cline, Author of Ready Player One

Q) So it seems you’re a bit of a pop-culture buff. In your debut novel Ready Player One you incorporate literally hundreds of pop culture references, many of them in ways that are integral to the book’s plot. What’s the first thing you remember geeking out over?

A) Sesame Street and the Muppets. I thought Jim Henson ruled the universe. I even thought it was pretty cool that I shared my first name with a muppet. Until the first day of kindergarten, when I quickly learned that "Ernie" was not a cool name to have. That was about the time I segued into my next childhood obsession, Star Wars.

Q) Like the book’s hero, you possess a horrifyingly deep knowledge of a terrifyingly broad swathe of culture, ranging from John Hughes movies to super-obscure Japanese animation to 8-bit videogames to science-fiction and fantasy literature to role-playing games like Dungeons & Dragons. What the heck is wrong with you?! How do you have so much time on your hands?

A) Well, I’m raising a toddler now, so I don’t have as much time to geek out as I used to. I think I amassed a lot of that knowledge during my youth. Like most geeks, I was a sponge for all kinds of movies, TV shows, cartoons, and video games. Then as an adult, I worked at a long series of low paying tech support jobs that allowed me to surf the Internet all day, and I spent a lot of my cubicle time looking up obscure pop culture minutiae from my childhood while I waited for people to reboot their PCs. Of course, I spent most of my off hours geeking out, too. Luckily, all those hours can now be classified as "research" for my novel.

Q) You’re stranded on an island and you can only take one movie with you. What is it?

A) Easy! The Lord of the Rings Extended Edition. (Can I take all of the DVD Extras and Making of Documentaries, too?)

Q) You’re given free tickets and back stage passes to one concert (artist can be living or dead)- who is it and why?

A) Are we talking about time travel back to a specific concert in the past here? Because it would be pretty cool to stand on the roof of Apple Records and watch the Beatles jam up there. But my favorite rock band that’s still together is RUSH, and I just bought tickets to see them this June!

Q) Favorite book of all time.

A) That’s an impossible question! I could maybe give you three favorites: Snow Crash by Neal Stephenson, Galapagos by Kurt Vonnegut, and The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams.

Q) Best failed TV show pilot available on Youtube?

A) The unaired Batgirl pilot starring Yvonne Craig.

Q) Favorite episode of Cowboy Bebop?

A) “Ganymede Elegy.” Or maybe “Boogie Woogie Feng Shui.”

Q) What’s the first arcade game you ever played? What’s your favorite?

A) I was deflowered by Space Invaders. My all time favorite coin-op game was probably Black Tiger.

Q) Your idea of the perfect day...

A) Play Black Tiger. Then go see Big Trouble in Little China at the Alamo Drafthouse with Kurt Russell and John Carpenter doing a live Q&A afterwards. When I get home that night, I accidentally invent a cheap abundant clean energy source that saves human civilization. I celebrate by staying up late to watch old Ultraman episodes with my daughter (who loves Ultraman even more than I do).

Q) True or False. We hear you own a DeLorean and that you plan on tricking it out to be a time-travelling, Ghostbusting, Knight-Rider car.

A) False. I actually plan on tricking it out to be a time-traveling Ghostbusting Knight Riding Jet Car. It’s going to have both a Flux Capacitor and an Oscillation Overthruster in it, so that my Delorean can travel through time AND solid matter. My personalized plates are ECTO88, just like a DeLorean that appears in my book.

(I’m so glad that you asked this question, because now I can justify buying the car as a "promotional tool" for my book. Everyone reading this is a witness! My DeLorean is helping me promote my book! The fact that I’ve wanted one since I was ten years old is totally irrelevant!)

Q) Speaking of DeLoreans: biggest plot hole in the Back to The Future Films?

A) The Back to The Future Trilogy is perfect and contains no plot holes! Except for the plot hole inherent in nearly all time travel films: The planet Earth is moving through space at an immense speed at all times. So if you travel back in time, you are traveling to a time when the Earth was in a different location, and you and your time machine would appear somewhere out in deep space. For a time machine to be useful, it also needs to be able to teleport you to wherever the Earth was/is at your destination time.

Q) But there are two DeLoreans in 1885--why doesn’t Doc dig out the one he buried in a cave for Marty to find in 1955 and use the gasoline from it to get the other DeLorean up to 88mph?

A) Doc would have drained the gas tank before he stored a car for 80 years, so there wouldn’t have been any gas. And tampering with the DeLorean in the cave at all could conceivably create a universe-ending paradox, because it has to be in the cave for Marty to get back to 1885 in the first place. Totally not a plot hole!

A review from a Gen Xer...
By D.G.S.
I don't usually write reviews, but I feel compelled on this one. I was born in 1971 and grew up in the 80s. I wanted to love this book for all the nostalgia, but the problem is, as a kid who grew up in the 80s I loved all the references, but as an adult father who has gained some wisdom in the 90s and 2000s, this book seemed like a sad regression. Basically it is about a brilliant man who grew up in the 80s and ended up creating world changing technology who is going to leave all of his legacy to the person who can figure out his final game. But the kids who play the game are nothing like the creator of the game. They have created nothing, they have achieved nothing. Instead they have immersed themselves in useless knowledge and live as pale wanna bees to the grand geniuos they want to emulate. This makes the characters shallow, banal, and really hard to route for. And yet we are supposed to route for them, clearly. Then we are expected to believe this group of misfits can achieve feats that the "corporate goonies" could never dream of. It is so silly. For instance, the first challenge refers to a Tomb of Horrors. The hero of the story figures out it is a reference to a Dungeons and Dragons module of the same name, then does a search of the planet he figures out it is on and finds it in about 10 minutes. Now we are supposed to believe that the mega corporation who knew everything about the creators life and passions, would not have figured out the reference, and would not have searched every single planet in the game to find that tomb??? Ridiculous. It only took the protagonist about 10 minutes to buy the very cheap software and search the planet, and the mega corporation wouldn't have figured this out already??? And the plot just gets sillier and sillier from there. But it boils down to this, whatever you might think of evil mega corporations, do you really want the world to be owned and run by nerds who have spent their entire lives learning useless pop culture references from an era they did not even grow up in instead of actaully trying to become something better? I don't. I don't want these people having any influence over my life at all.

I give the book two stars because it was fun walking down memory lane.

The writing sorely mismatches the intended audience...
By Indrigis
RPO seems to be written for the 30+ crowd nostalgic for the 80s but the language, writing and plot delivery seem to be much more fit for the 15+ crowd. Not to mention that there's very little happening outside of the protagonist consistently showing off his arcane knowledge of 80s pop culture phenomenons and fantastic skill at age old arcade games. The whole setting feels like a cheap William Gibson tribute, too. There's this, uh, cyberspace and, you know, like, the hacking and the like and so, kinda, there's also this treasure hidden in the cyberspace, but to get to it you gotta be, like, totally, a cool dude who knows where his towel and VR headset are.

If this book was condensed, say, to a fifth of its present volume, it would be Twitch chat, dank and full of memes. Apart from the dank memes from the 80s there's little to take in, since the practical details of how the whole VR-bound world works are often omitted in favor of yet another foray into an obscure arcade game that never got released on cabinets but existed as a board image that only the radest of dudes got to play (and our protagonist is so rad he's almost but not entirely unlike cool).

If you're nostalgic, grab the originals. If you're too young to be nostalgic for the 80s but yearn for some good cyberpunk sci-fi, there are William Gibson and Leinad Zeraus.

Terrible book, poorly written and simply a vehicle to drop 80s pop culture references ad nauseam.
By James
This book is terrible. Ernest Cline spends so much time in the first 2/3 of the book dropping 80's pop culture references ad nauseam that he forgot to write an interesting story. Chapter 6 begins with several pages that are literally just a list of things that are cool about the 80's. As a child of the 80's, I ought to appreciate these references, but I don't... they're obnoxious.

Aside from the incessant 80's references, the story itself is boring and contrived. Imagine someone wrote a story about World of Warcraft, but not about its characters and using the world as a setting... no, imagine that person wrote a story about a guy and his buddies PLAYING World of Warcraft. That's essentially what Ready Player One is about... some people playing a video game.

The story has no tension, I never cared about any of the characters because they're all just video game avatars for most of the story, and the challenges that the characters do face are all easily solved. Very deus ex machina, this book.

Terrible book, poorly written. I should have read Octavia Butler like I was going to...

Disorganized and not enough exercises
By Amazon Customer
I wouldn't recommend this book. Its information is a bit disorganized in their lessons; not clearly delineated as in other language grammar lesson books. The worst part is there is very little opportunity to practice the lessons in their exercises. There are not enough exercises. The ones that are there are disorganized in their presentations. It desperately needs a companion workbook in order to master anything from its lessons. I feel it also tries to do too much: instead of putting in their "cultural notes" I would use that space to put in more exercises.

Old hands and Newbies will learn a thing or two
By Rob Morales
I have been a fan of Mr. Skinner since he's been with FSM, but I never realized he was such an airliner fan. He does a great job of explaining most of the aspects of airliner modeling, from basics to superdetailing. I especially loved the tip on painting gloss white, airbrushing a thinner-heavy coat to smooth out the gloss white. I was able to "up my game" significantly with this one tip! Great guide for beginners and experienced builders alike!
