Good book for the novice to intermediate craftsman

Good book for the novice to intermediate craftsman, the information is clearly explained and is helpful. The pictures unfortunately are often too small or are taken from too far away, so many are not that helpful. There are not many good books available on brazing and soldering though, so this is still a very good purchase. I liked it enough that I think I will purchase the Welding edition from the same author.

Knife maker's helper

Bought as a gift for a knife maker who needed to be able to solder where the hilt and blade meet. He read it front to back without putting it down and proceeded to solder perfectly. Many of the books about soldering are aimed at jewelry making. This book was the only one we could find that covered more than that. Was worth the money because he's putting out extremely high quality knives and has many orders for his work.

Found this in the Amazon appstore for my kindle fire. Was really excited to have all my email in one place. Now it tells me to update which I tried but it sends me to Google play store which my device does not support without rooting. I was hoping to use this and I don't know a way around it. Seems more like Amazon's fault then the app.

Disappointed to say the least.

Would be more than happy to give this app a 5-star review based upon ease of UI (user interface) and streamlined appearance. However, this app will not update no longer syncs with my Amazon Kindle Fire HD/Silk browser. Kicks out of Yahoo! Mail, requesting password verification, leading to yet another error that "My Mail App will not run without access to Google Play Services". Allowing downloads from 'Unknown Sources' does not alleviate this problem, either, since it does not connect through Silk.

If there is a fix for these problems, please, do so. I love this app. Otherwise, I shall be on the hunt for a replacement all-in-one mail app.

A Lovely, Elegant Tudor Novel

Most people-even some Tudor fans-mainly associate Henry the 8th with Anne Boleyn, his fascinating second queen. This novel is about Henry's first wife, Catherine of Aragon-and it covers her early life, as well as her marriage with Henry before he became obsessed with Anne. Some of the facts may surprise Tudor fans. 1.Catherine grew up in Moorish Spain, raised by the formidable warrior queen, Isabella. 2. She was more than just a religious woman: she was beautiful, intelligent, artistic, and strong-willed.3. She was briefly married to Henry's older brother, Arthur, and after he died she spent years of poverty and lonliness in England. 4. Henry wanted her so much that he married her despite his family's disapproval-and the church's rule against marrying his brother's widow.5.Her marriage to Henry was largely happy for many years. He admired and respected her enough to share the running of his kingdom with her-and he made her his regent when he went to war.6. And finally, the big question: was Catherine's marriage to Arthur consummated? When Henry was in the divorce process with Catherine, he tried to have their marriage annulled on these grounds. But to the end of her life, Catherine insisted that she came to Henry a virgin. Would such a deeply religious woman lie about this? Ms Gregory takes these basic facts, adds some fiction (as well as her own interpretation) to them, and weaves everything into a beautiful, touching story of a woman who was a queen in every sense of the word. She also adds a very tender and poignant story of young love that may or may not have happened, but will touch reader's hearts. This book does not have the scandal, sex, and continually moving action of "The Other Boleyn Girl", but it is beautifully written, descriptive, romantic-and definetely worth your time.

Oh, How Delicious!

Oh, how delicious! This is historical FICTION. Emphasis on the word "fiction." While it is a historical account of Catalina, princess of Spain who becomes Katherine of Aragon, Henry VIII's first wife and queen of England, there is liberal artistic license taken.

The facts are the bones of the book; the fiction is the flesh. And author Philippa Gregory, who is one of the leading novelists about this time period, melds the two brilliantly. The book alternates between a third-person story and the first-person thoughts of Catalina/Katherine.

This is the first in a series of novels about the Tudors. The story continues in the next book, "The Other Boleyn Girl," when the Bolelyn family (first Mary and then her sister, Anne) so devastatingly disrupt the marriage of the King Henry VIII and Katherine of Aragon and set in motion the birth of the Church of England.

If you enjoy the stories of the Tudors--I find it all quite enthralling--then this is a must-read.

Queen Katherine of England and how the great lie changed history

This is the story of Henry VIII's first wife, Katharine of Aragon. It is about her beginning in Spain and continues as she becomes Princess of Wales and then, Queen of England.

It is an amazing story. She is born Catalina of Aragon, youngest daughter of King Ferdinand of Aragon and Queen Isabella of Castile. The two managed to run the Moors out of Spain, begin the Inquisition, and unite Aragon and Castile into the realm of Spain. Catalina stays with her mother on the battlefield, learning battlefield strategy and viewing Isabella donning armour and leading the troops into battle. Throughout the narrative, we learn about the great society of the Moors, about their great learning in medicine and science and their tolerance of all religions. Not so the Catholic Isabella and Ferdinand, who drive the Moors and the Jews from Spain and impose Roman Catholic doctrine on all citizens.

Catalina has been promised to Henry VII's oldest son, Arthur, since infancy, in efforts towards a union of Spain and England. She has been raised in the belief that her destiny is to be Queen of England. At the age of 15, she is married in England to Arthur and the two take up residence in Wales, since Arthur is Prince of Wales, next in line for the throne. His father, Henry VII is the first Tudor king. Catalina and Arthur loathe each other at first, but soon fall madly and deeply in love. They are only supposed to meet once a week to begin an heir, but through a secret passage, Arthur goes to Catalina and they make mad, passionate love every night.

But not for long. In the fifth month of their marriage, Arthur develops "the sweats" (unknown disease, but thought to be caused by bad sewage and water, similar to cholera). Within days, he is dead. Philippa Gregory thinks that on his death bed, he extracted a promise from Katharine, which lie would change the course of English history. In any event, fact or fiction, the lie went down in history as fact. "The lie" enables her to marry the second son, Henry, to become Henry VIII and fulfill her destiny as Queen of England.

Katherine is 6 years older than Henry. It takes a few years, during which time she is pursued by the father, Henry VII, and suffers from poverty when she is ignored. But Henry the Younger has quite a crush on his late brother's widow, and finally, they are married.

We know that she was eventually supplanted by Anne Boleyn, but there is a lot of living to do before that time is reached. Henry was not trained to the kingship as was his older brother, Arthur and has been vastly spoiled by his grandmother. He remains vain, selfish, willful and hedonistic to the point where Katherine takes over the running of the kingdom by paying bills and assuming all the necessary duties to keep the court afloat and afford Henry's self-indulgent, extravagant life style.

This is a magnificent story of a queen who knew how to run a court logistically and when Henry was absent with a war against the French, how to man, supply and lead an army against the Scots, and win it.

It is also about her struggles towards motherhood, of babies lost and one, Mary, born. It is a story of her unending, timeless love for Arthur and how she fulfills her destiny to be queen of England through "the lie."

Gregory's narration is juxtaposed through a third person account of historical events and Katherine's private thoughts at every step of development.

This story of Queen Katherine is a compelling narrative from beginning to end. In the concluding passages as Anne Boleyn appears on the scene, we know how it will all turn against Katherine. There is therefore a touch of sadness for this great woman and outstanding queen, as we realize what struggles she has ahead of her. But that cannot dim, the greatness of her achievements.

It only has the questions and answers. If you are new to this like I am you really don't have a point of reference to anything. I wish it was more like a driving manual- totally fraustrated.

This view denies Christ is God Incarnate, regarding him as primarily a moral exemplar to be imitated. Crisp rejects this alternative account of the nature of Christology.

Great Work in Christology

The "Current Issues in Theology" series is excellent, and this addition to the series is no different. Oliver Crisp is part of a growing movement of analytic theologians who are seeking to clearly define and defend many of the traditional Orthodox understandings of Christian doctrine. In this volume Crisp sets out to clearly define Chalcedonian Christology and then defend it from 3 current threats. The first threat is the notion that Christ had a fallen human nature. The second is a divine kenosis view where God the Son emptied Himself of His divinity in order to become human. Finally, the third threat is a non-Incarnational Christology where Christ is not the Son of God. Perhaps the Incarnation is beautiful metaphor (John Hick)that is meant to inspire us.

Personally, I found Crisp's defense against the last two threats to be quite solid and philosophically astute. I am not entirely sure if I accept his defense against the first threat, nor am I sure that it is in fact a threat to Christology. Here is why. The classical understanding of the doctrine of original sin entailed the doctrine of original guilt. As such the traditional articulation of the Incarnation was that Christ was born without original sin which entails a lack of original guilt. Recent discussions in philosophical theology have denied that humans are born with original guilt. One could go on to argue that Christ qua human was born with original sin, born corrupted, but remained sinless His entire life because a corrupted nature does not necessitate sinful behavior. Crisp is willing to concede that this is a possible way to articulate a robust Christology (p108-9), but goes on to argue that this account would still suffer from other difficulties. I will not mention what those are because this review is long enough.

After reading this I look forward to Crisp's forthcoming works on the Incarnation and previous work on the metaphysics of sin.

Great Defense of Chalcedonian Christology

Crisp explicates and promotes a Chalcedonian Christology in the first half of the book while defending this view against three attacks on this classical stance in the second half specifically: a proposition that Christ had a fallen human nature, modern kenosis theories, and a non-incarnational Christology.

Crisp's explanation of "nature-perichoresis," which attempts to define the relationship between Christ's divine and human natures in hypostatic union (chapter one), sets up his own "divine krypsis" in the chapter regarding kenosis. Kenosis is a doctrine in which the Word either divests Himself completely of (at least) omnipotence, omniscience, and omnipresence during the Incarnation; or, alternatively, the Word voluntarily limits the exercise of these traits while still possessing them. The 'strong' (ontological) view of kenosis is identified as being "serious and debilitating" while the 'weak' (functionalist) view is termed "not conventional" (specifically, the belief that it was the Holy Spirit who performed all Jesus Christ's miracles [p 25]).

His "divine krypsis" [pp 147-153] is defined as non-kenotic (not ontological or functionalist) since the Logos is not limited in any way. This works in virtue of the perichoretic relationship of the divine nature to the human in hypostatic union while restricting any transference of essences or properties. While the person of Jesus Christ is obviously limited in physical location, the Logos remains omnipresent (and omnipotent as well as omniscient) in sustaining the cosmos extra carnem - outside the body - via the so-called extra calvinisticum. The limitation on the person of Jesus Christ is only qua human. This is somewhat analogous to the way in which the Holy Spirit works in and through Christians [pp 25-27]; however, there are times that the Incarnate Christ is clearly using His inherent divine nature [e.g. Mark 4:35-41; John 5:21-24 (granting eternal life, cf. Luke 23:43)] even though there are others in which it can be argued He relied on the Spirit instead.

The author handily defends Chalcedonian Christology in his refutation of John Hick's doctrine of the Incarnation as identified in the titles of two of his books, "The Myth of God Incarnate" and its follow-up "The Metaphor of God Incarnate" in which Hick proffers his doctrine of a non-divine Christ (who is instead metaphorically 'incarnate' as God being that He was merely in "right relationship" with the Father instead of actually being deity Himself) in his quest for religious pluralism. Crisp illustrates that Hick's view has difficulty being termed "Christian" (in the historically orthodox sense) since a non-Christian would have no trouble affirming Hick's doctrine of Incarnation as metaphor.

Not being a theology student myself, i.e., having had no formal schooling, the book was a bit challenging requiring me to really study bits of it and to learn new terms in the process; however, I did not find the book a particularly difficult read. Well done, I say.

Excellent theological analysis of key Christological doctrine

Crisp's analysis of the Chalcedonian definition of the Incarnation and Christ was excellent and informatve, regardless of the level of theological knowledge of the reader. He is excellent in exploring and defending the Chalcedonian and Constantinople (681) definitions. He is adept in defending the definition from attack by three claims that "threaten" it.
Crisp is exceptionally logical, articulate, and methodical in his analysis. He offers both the theological student and the accomplished theologian much food for thought, while keeping his collection of essays to fewer than 200 pages. His references to other theories are excellent; his historical summaries are superb. An excellent book! Well worth reading!

Just a repeat

Although continually reading and absorbing the Course is a good thing, this Book adds no insight to the Course. These daily lessons are merely reprints of parts of the Course. You would do better reading the Course itself or picking up 365 Daily Reflections to act on the Course or A Year of Miracles to better absorb and understand the Course.. Very disappointed.

After my morning meditation, I read a daily Holy Shift (on my Fire tablet) and then move to my Course in Miracles Lesson and text. My day isn't the same without Holy Shift! I have also bought it for friends.

Only one side of the gold coin.

Being a student of ACIM for over 30 years I have great appreciation for this monumental work. I also enjoy books from students. This book is a valuable daily reminder of some of the beautiful passages but far from the true value of the work. The main focus of the Course is to remove the blocks to the as awareness of Love.

I dearly appreciate Robert's contributions in this world and that is why I gave it 3 stars. However I would caution any readers of this book and any other book regarding the Course in assuming anything about the work itself or how it transforms the mind. READ THE COURSE ITSELF to get the full Monte.
