Can be helpful in addition to Wallace

This is a fairly simple Greek grammar. In comparison to Wallace, he briefly describes the function, or case, and then supplements it with many examples. There are a plethora of references cited, so it is probable that one could find a reference to a difficult passage which one struggling with. It is not only beneficial for that but also to reinforce what one is learning in Wallace.

Too many typographical errors

I purchased this book several years ago. The book is well thought out and presents the syntax in an easy to understand way. However, the book was not carefully proofread. There are too many errors in the Greek and English text. Many Greek words are misspelled and some of the illustrative sentences are incomplete. The text suddenly ends when there shoud be more text to complete the translation from the Greek cited. I teach Biblical Greek and would not recommend that my students purchase the book. My edition is 1995.

Awkward story

As a mom and now new auntie I have read and enjoy my fair share of children's books. I bought this for my niece and the book is so weird. Even for a one year old who isn't getting the story line I couldn't stand reading it. Bought because with the cute little duck and goose on the cover how could you go wrong?! Sorry I purchased and ended up getting a different book to put in her basket instead.

Eh ... just okay.

This was our first Duck book purchase ... and not real thrilled over it. The book is sturdy and artwork is colorful, but story was lacking. With asking questions, pointing out pictures, and making up own story we were able to keep it interesting. Doubt it will be a book picked up often though. Sorry.

I wrote Just Like Someone Without Mental Illness Only More So because I was increasingly annoyed with my younger self, who had wrapped up everything with a bow. You can try but you don’t just get to get over mental illness at age twenty-five, go to medical school, write a book, get married and call it a wrap.

In the seventies I was in so in love with the medical model I almost thought I had invented it. "No shame. No blame." I was thrilled to not have my health be dependent on the sanity of society or the wellness of those around me. I was magnanimous about not wanting to credit insight or hard work or circumstances like the kindness of others. Now, the medical model has morphed into "Shut up and take your pills." What passes for care is medication, medication, and more medication, the purpose of which is only incidentally and occasionally to help the patient get a life.

Much of mental illness is genetic, but I’m now quite sure there are people with more or less the same genetics I have who never go crazy and others who never get well. As a kid who wrote a little and painted a little and played a little music, I certainly didn’t want my mental health riding on anything as flimsy as my creative abilities but, among other things, I’ve come to see that a willingness to write, paint and play music is more than a little important to progress and just trying to keep my feet under me.

It was the feeling that good things had happened to me in spite of myself, that I had a rich life that showed itself in my house and how I practiced pediatrics and how we lived as a family that made me want to write Just Like Someone Without Mental Illness Only More So. I’m grateful to the gritty clench-jawed kid who wrote The Eden Express, I think it’s an excellent book, but I’m glad I’m not him anymore.

Two not unrelated challenges--being novelist Kurt Vonnegut's son and suffering episodes of schizophrenia--shape, but don't confine, this mordantly witty, slightly subversive memoir. Vonnegut (The Eden Express) weathered a scruffy childhood with his as yet obscure dad ("I'll always remember my father as the world's worst car salesman") and was hospitalized for three bouts of psychosis in his 20s. He recovered and went on to Harvard Medical School and a successful career in pediatrics--then a fourth psychotic break upended him 14 years after the first one. (Taken to the hospital where he worked, he found himself greeting colleagues while tied to a gurney.) Vonnegut vividly conveys the bizarre logic of the voices and delusions that occasionally plagued him, which he finds not much nuttier than what passes for normalcy. (He's especially incensed by the insurance bureaucracies he thinks are ruining medicine.) His father's son, he writes with a matter-of-fact absurdism--"The patient who just died lies there quietly and everyone else stops rushing around trying to do something about it"--champions misfits, and attacks the system. Afflicted with bipolar disorder, Vonnegut penned an account about his mental illness (The Eden Express, 1975) when in his twenties. He then forsook letters for a stethoscope; his occupation as pediatric physician backgrounds Vonnegut’s new memoir, which relays how he has coped with his condition while holding an important job and raising a family. Amid criticisms of red tape in medical practice, Vonnegut recounts the activities, such as painting and softball, that absorbed his nonwork energies, as well as his bibulous habits. Personal crisis arrived in 1985, when he decided he was an alcoholic, suffered “crack-up number four,” and was put in a straitjacket and hospitalized. He describes the episode psychically as being beset with voices and a torrent of thought that all seemed as though they were actually happening. Reentering the real world, Vonnegut resumed pediatrics, fondly recalling a brief stint at a free clinic in Honduras but also reporting a divorce and remarriage. Powerful and enlightening

Pretty much the sequel to "Eden ...", by the same author, and just as powerful. The impact comes from the matter-of-fact style of memoir writing of a "recovering" mental illness afflicted. I almost used the word "victim", but that would only be appropriate if the afflicted had gone inescapably to his death. This is the first person story of a subject who fumbled and struggled through the baffling onslaught of images and impulses of a mind going off the rails, and with the imperfect help of friends and mental health professionals gained day-to-day control of a potentially crippling end deadly mental disease. Clearly he had the advantage of a favorable social and economic situation, but in my opinion he has done a laudable job of making a worthwhile career to this point in time, and I wish him continuing success. Dr. Vonnegut in his continuing role as a pediatrician devotes a considerable amount of exposition about his medical practice to describing the eccentricities of pediatrics as well as a discussion of the inefficiencies and obstructions of the current American healthcare system which is driven by Insurance restrictions and complexity. This portion of the book alone is worthwhile reading as a candid chronicling of this controversial, costly and frustrating system we all must deal with.

This Vonnegut is My Clear Choice

What I like most about this book is Vonnegut's down-to-earth brilliance, which seems anything but brilliant. His gift with words makes it feel as though you're chatting with a good friend in a coffee shop. This friend is so reasonable and compassionate, you can't help but consume his every word, easily agreeing with it. You also can't help but wish he'd been your, or your children or grandchildren's, pediatrician. What I also like is that Mark is the Vonnegut whose reading I choose. It's more accessible, less insane to me, than his father's. {I'm giving it a 4 to leave room for Eden Express' ranking, and because I found some spots to be a bit choppy.} This one will change your thinking about mental health, the medical profession, and - perhaps - the world's greatest author whose son shines brightly under the radar.

Kurt Vonnegut's son, telling his own story of mental illness with bipolar disorder. He eventually goes on to Harvard Med, becomes a pediatrician, and finds purpose in his life. Interesting just because of the story, and his famous father, it holds the reader, but not because of the coherence of the writing, Ibe dies bit get a true sense of the burden of the illness, but you can get that in other books. Mark writes with an ironic tone, and nevertheless makes it rhtough medical school and into a practice benefiting society. This is enough to give hope to others with bipolar, but his particular set of circumstances is his own. At some months after I read this, I have only a spotty sense of the book, so it didn't stick.

He is like every one of us afterall

I spent the whole of last weekend reading 'Long Walk to freedom'. For two days I didnot leave the world Nelson had trapped me in. As I finished the book and took a walk outside, I stopped seeing people as Hausas or Yorubas, Northerners or Southerners(ethnic groups in Nigeria). All I saw were brothers who could bury the hatchets of ethnicity and forge a country of love and peace. Before I read the book I saw Mandela as a super human with no flaws at all. In the book he painted himself in true colours; accepting his flaws and proclaiming his successes. He is afterall human. I have always believed that life is worth nothing if one can not stand up for what one believes in. I have always advocated to the Marcus Garvey/ Malcolm X forms of freedom fighting. I always thought that peaceful protests were for the spineless. Why would I like Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr., watch while the enemy unleashes violence on my people? Nelson in the book took me through the intricacies of peaceful civil disturbance and I have come to realise that this form of protest is even more demanding than sheer brute force. 'Long walk...' is a must-read for any one who still has humanity in his being... Beware -- Abridged Version!

I have been wanting to read this book so finally ordered it. Imagine how surprised I was to open the book to the title page and it states: Abridgment and Connecting Notes by Richard W. Kelso! However, Amazon's web page never mentions this is an abridged version of the book. I am returning this copy to get the unabridged version of the book published by Little, Brown & Company in 1994.

Polit thriller

Despite due respect for a great leader, I did not really expect to like this autobiography very much. Mandela is no great speaker, his TV presence is rather flat, his English apparently not masterful. The life story in summary does not seem to have that much interest either, considering the long jail time and the fact that most of the "hot action" of the anti-apartheid movement happened while he was on Robben Island.
All wrong. The writing is surprisingly fluent, the story telling surprisingly efficient and free of waste as well as redundancies. Also free of sentimentality and exaggerated pathos.
If there is anything that I wished to be more detailed it is the period of his childhood and youth. This period is described in a rather remote way and with a sometimes irritating lack of explanation or reflection. I realized that may have happened due to the conditions under which the book was written: in jail. Also I could imagine that editors suggested some shortening: after all the book is still quite hefty.
If there is one negative comment that I have to make, it refers to NM's insistence that all trouble between black groups, such as the Inkatha violence problems, or tribal conflicts, have been caused by the perfidy of the whites. As much as I can understand the psychology behind this wishful thinking, I do not think it is a realistic approach.
Despite this comment and despite the book's size, it is never boring. Highly recommendable.

About the Author
David Matthews taught Urdu at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London for over thirty years. Mohamed Kasim Dalvi is the former Chair of Examinations (Urdu) for Edexcel and teaches at SOAS language centre. good, with some reservations ...

Realizing that there could be many practitioners in the digital fine arts community who likely will strongly object to the title of this book (..."cookbook, recipes," etc.), and noting that the biggest chunk of the book is taken up with the forty-eight picture-making prescriptions without any real insights into why they were selected ..., it does have some things to strongly recommend it. First, it deals comprehensively with one of the least well documented of the creative feature sets within Photoshop: the blending modes. Second, the author manages to encompass a lot of creative options without really using genuine montage (that is, he blends together different versions of the same starting image, without introducing totally different image subjects as separate Photoshop image layers). Third, the author deliberately restricts the use of other tools within the context of the book - for example, only 'Gaussian Blur' and 'Find Edges' are utilized with any regularity from the Photoshop Filters menu. And fourth, he has come up with a neat way of documenting the settings used in the blending undertaken, which simplifies reproducing the procedures. The recipes (yuk!) turn out to be as easy as, well, making different flavors of fudge (yummy!) ...

Despite all these pluses, the book suffers from numerous editing and layout problems. There are typographical mistakes, there are missing page numbers (!), and the format is quite confusing (and is only "saved" in some instances by the fact that there are lots of fairly large example images, so that it's possible to see what was done, without needing to follow the text).

Finally, potential purchasers should know that one of the author's favourite blend modes is 'Hard Mix', which was initially introduced in Photoshop CS, but remains a sort of oddball in the full list of blending modes. (Personally, I've found no good reason to upgrade beyond Photoshop version 7, and would note that there are independent means of simulating, and even exceeding, what 'Hard Mix' is shown to provide in the book.)

Overall, it seems to me that the attributes of the book outweigh its negative points - and that it might be useful to consider as a way of expanding creative image-building options for those with interests in web-based graphics as well as advanced photography and fine art.

Useful Insight

Many end users are aware of the countless features that Adobe has provided within Photoshop. One of the most powerful features that many operators do not use (or forget to use) is the blending features. These can be found within each layer and are essential to the many creative tools found in Photoshop. These tools provide different blending capabilities that can address the creative professional.

This book addresses these needs and is an excellent creative resource to guide users to use these powerful blending features found within Photoshop. This publication is well written and is easy for many beginners to follow, yet it also addresses the needs of the professional seasoned Photoshop user.

There is a great amount of publications about Photoshop ... this is one of the finest I have encountered. The information is valuable and this book is reasonably priced (compared to some that are full of fluff and useless). O'Reilly places valuable information within the reach of the masses that will not require a second mortgage.

This book actually rates 4 1/2 stars. If you have the need, it comes highly recommended.

Great Book

I guess it depends on how you learn. This book has recipes for various looks using Photoshop's Blending Modes. The examples generally include several different kinds of photos. The result is that you get to see what happens to photos of things, people, landscapes, etc. using the same or similar recipes. The author also tells you when he did things a little differently for one or two kinds of photos, and why.

I've seen a lot of this stuff before, but found that I learned a lot from how this book is laid out. It should also make it a lot easier to find, and use, a specific technique for a specific problem.

Because I am a digital scrapbooker, I might find all of this a lot more useful than some other people who use Photoshop. I'm not only manipulating photos when I scrapbook, I am also making and manipulating digital papers and elements. These techniques would be extremely useful for scrapbooking.

A Conversation with Author Kathleen Grissom

Q: What information surprised you while doing research on white indentured servants?

A: When I first began my research I was astonished to discover the great numbers of Irish that were brought over as indentured servants. Then, when I saw advertisements for runaway Irish indentured servants, I realized that some of them, too, must have suffered under intolerable conditions.

Q: Why did you chose not to go into detail about some of the most dramatic plot points in the novel, for example, the death of Waters or the abuse of young Marshall?

A: For the most part, Lavinia and Belle dictated the story to me. From the beginning, it became quite clear that if I tried to embellish or change their story, their narration would stop. When I withdrew, the story would continue. Their voices were quite distinct. Belle, who always felt grounded to me, certainly did not hold back with description, particularly of the rape. Lavinia, on the other hand, felt less stable, less able to cope; and at times it felt as though she was scarcely able to relate her horror.

Q: It is interesting that your novel has two narrators--Lavinia and Belle. Do you have any plans to continue the story into the next generation--perhaps from the perspectives of Jaime and Elly?

A: In 1830, Jamie is a well-respected ornithologist in Philadelphia and Sukey is enslaved by the Cherokee Indians in North Carolina. Theirs are the two voices I hear. In time I will know if I am meant to tell their story. Presently I am writing Crow Mary, another work of historical fiction. A few years ago I was visiting Fort Walsh in the Cypress Hills of Saskatchewan. As I listened to an interpreter tell of Mary, who, in 1872, at the age of sixteen, was traded in marriage to a well-known fur trader, a familiar deep chill went thorough me. I knew then that I would return to write about this Crow woman. Some of her complex life is documented, and what fascinates me are her acts of bravery, equal, in my estimation, to those of Mama Mae.

Q: This is your first novel after diverse careers in retail, agriculture, and the arts. How have each of these experiences contributed to your writing style?

A: I don't know that any endeavor specifically contributed to my writing style, but I do know that every phase of my life helped prepare me to write this book.

Q: The dialogue of the slaves in this novel is very believable. It must have been a difficult thing to achieve. How did you go about creating authentic voices from two hundred years ago?

A: At the very beginning of my research I read two books of slave narratives: Bullwhip Days: The Slaves Remember and Weevils in the Wheat: Interviews with Virginia Ex-Slaves. Soon after, the voices from The Kitchen House began to come to me. My original draft included such heavy dialect that it made the story very difficult to read. In time I modified the style so the story could be more easily read.

Q: You said you wrote the prologue in one sitting after being inspired by a map you found while renovating an old plantation tavern. Since this is your first novel, do you think you were "guided" by residents of the past?

A: Not only do I feel I was guided but also that I was gifted with their trust. However, I am not alone in this. In Alice Walker's book The Color Purple, she writes: "I thank everybody in this book for coming. A.W., author and medium." Unless I misread that, I'd say, in this experience, I'm in good company.

Q: Your book has been described as "Gone with the Wind turned upside down." Are you a fan of Margaret Mitchell's novel? Which writers have inspired you through the years?

A: I have only recently read Gone with the Wind. Although I did enjoy it, a few of the writers that have truly inspired me are Robert Morgan, Alice Randall, Susan Fromberg Schaeffer, Edward P. Jones, Nuala O'Faolain, Alexandra Fuller, Susan Howatch, Rick Bragg, Breena Clarke, Beryl Markham, Alice Walker, Joan Didion . . . this list could go on forever. I love to read.

Q: There are many characters in this novel. How did you go about choosing their names?

A: They were all taken from different lists of slaves that I found in my research.

Q: What advice do you have for writers working on their first novels?

A: If you feel called to write a book, consider it a gift. Look around you. What assistance is the universe offering you as support? I was given an amazing mentor, a poet, Eleanor Drewry Dolan, who taught me the importance of every word. To my utter amazement, there were times she found it necessary to consult three dictionaries to evaluate one word! Take the time you need to learn the craft. Then sit down and write. When you hand over your completed manuscript to a trusted reader, keep an open mind. Edit, edit, and edit again. And, of course, never give up! Q: At times in the novel, you can almost smell the hearty foods being prepared by Mama and others. In your research, did you find any specific notes or recipes from kitchen houses that you can share with your readers?

A: In 1737, William Byrd, founder of Richmond, wrote of the many types of fruits and vegetables available in Virginia. Watermelons, pumpkins, squashes, cucumbers, artichokes, asparagus, green beans, and cauliflower were all being cultivated. I discovered that many of these were preserved by pickling. For those interested in how this was done and for recipes from that time, an excellent resource is Martha Washington's Booke of Cookery and Booke of Sweetmeats, transcribed by Karen Hess.
While in Williamsburg, I watched re enactors roast beef over a spit in a kitchen fireplace. Small potatoes in a pan beneath the meat were browning in the drippings, and I cannot tell you how I longed for a taste. That was my inspiration for the Christmas meal. For basics, such as the chicken soup, I built a recipe around what I knew would have been available for use in the kitchen house at that time.
Whenever Belle baked a molasses cake, I craved a taste. I did try several old recipes that I found, but I was unsatisfied with the results. So, using the old recipes as a baseline, my daughter, Erin, and I created our own version of a simple yet moist and tasty molasses cake. I am happy to share it with the readers:

Simple Molasses Cake
� cup butter
1/3 cup packed brown sugar
1 egg
� cup milk
1 cup molasses
2 cups flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon ground ginger
1 teaspoon cinnamon
2 dashes ground cloves
� teaspoon salt

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Grease an 8-inchsquare baking pan. In a large bowl, cream the butter and sugar. Beat in the egg. In a separate bowl, combine the milk and the molasses. In another bowl, combine the flour, baking soda, ginger, cinnamon, cloves, and salt. Add each of these alternately to the butter mixture, beating well between additions. Spoon batter into the prepared pan. Bake for approximately 45 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean.

Grissom's unsentimental debut twists the conventions of the antebellum novel just enough to give readers an involving new perspective on what would otherwise be fairly stock material. Lavinia, an orphaned seven-year-old white indentured servant, arrives in 1791 to work in the kitchen house at Tall Oaks, a Tidewater, Va., tobacco plantation owned by Capt. James Pyke. "The Kitchen House", a Noteworthy New Novel

After reading "The Kitchen House" I believe that Kathleen Grissom has crafted an absorbing historical tale that probes the darkest edges in this villainous period of American history by employing an extraordinary and distinctive approach. The author cleverly created two contrasting protagonists, Lavinia, the white girl-to-woman, and Belle, the mixed race slave, to move the story alternately from their separate perspectives; Ms. Grissom guides the reader into the deepest reaches of the soul of each character in the book. For me, at least, this memorable cast of characters, from the good ones to the downright evil ones seems to have established permanent residence in my thoughts. While I agree with M. Jacobsen's comment that Belle's chapters could have been longer (I really loved Belle), I don't believe her role to be less significant than Lavinia's. Lavinia, as a white person observes and shares the slave experience from within. This approach is unique, I think. At least, I don't recall encountering the technique in literature, and I found it extremely compelling.

The actual historical events of the period are less prominent than the actions, emotions and motivations of the people who live on either side of the implied, but not to be violated, boundary between the races. I think that the complicated relationships between Lavinia and Belle, Mama, and many of the other characters, allow the reader to discover tiny, but significant, cracks in this boundary through which the plot races along from crisis to crisis and then to the shocking, yet fitting conclusion.

Ms. Grissom obviously conducted exhaustive research into the time period of the book. As a born Canadian, she must be commended. In the book she succeeded in describing the customs, mores and artifacts of this period in a clear and entertaining way. Often, when reading a novel, I tend to skip over descriptive passages so as not to interrupt plot progression and character development. In "The Kitchen House" I found the descriptions and details charming and sometimes melancholy. Who can forget, now, what a vasculum is, or forget the image of little slave children pulling the cords of the ceiling fans in the dining rooms to cool their masters on stifling summer days?

I enjoyed reading this book so much that I bought several extra copies to share a very inspiring and special reading experience with special people. So, Ms. Grissom - will we be finding out what happens to the "Kitchen House" characters in the next generation? Kathleen Grissom's powerful first novel leaves me eagerly awaiting the next, whether or not it is a sequel or a totally new historical novel from a totally different perspective.

At 17, I realize that I'm not the greatest authority on literary merit. My life has been short, relatively unlived, inexperienced. I spend most of my time living through the lives of fictional people on someone else's pages and I feel the uneven weight of the book in my hands. I read The Kitchen House and couldn't feel a thing that wasn't being felt by Belle and Lavinia. I saw only them, their world. And when it was all over, I felt that I might cry because the last page had turned but suddenly, it seemed like the room wasn't empty.
As I read, all of them- Belle, Ben, Marshall even- had peeled their backs off the words to hover around me. And they haunted me for days, followed me everywhere. This novel is the kind that pulls in one as one person before spitting you back out wholly other. Maybe it's the raw, unabashed emotion, the unhindered heartache that claws into you, snags on that darkest part of you and intensifies it. Makes you regret your sins and rejoice in your loves. Either way, I felt what I've rarely felt- that my short life may have been slightly changed by The Kitchen House- or, really, the lives of those inside of it. That I had moved one inch, however miniscule, closer to that part of my bloodline, my heritage, which had remained so almost dreamlike in its distance, untouchable.
Belle could be anyone's ancestor, Lavinia could be anyone's history.
Yeah, that's it. I felt, I think, for the first time, really connected to a past I had only ever read about in text books. In 2 days, this novel revealed more than 12 years of U.S. History. And made it real, true, beautifully horrible in every ghostly- or ghastly- way.
There really aren't words, though I've used a considerable amount, to describe the swell of emotions you feel while reading this. But I suppose that's where the beauty lies. In the ability of words on white pages to create from their inhumanity that rawest spectrum of feelings which mark us as truly human.

Intriguing story, but it had some rough spots

I had a hard time deciding exactly how to rate this one, and I'll explain why. "The Kitchen House" by Kathleen Grissom is a novel I was sure I'd love when I read the blurb. I'm a history buff, particularly fond of the South, and an avid reader.

First, the parts I loved. The characters are well-drawn and easy to love or hate, depending on which one we're talking about. Most points are plausible, which shows the author must have done a great deal of research. The plot gave this book a storyline I absolutely enjoyed; as I fell asleep each night during the time I read this, I'd wondered about the characters and what would happen to them.

Now onto the parts I wasn't so fond of. The main problem I had with the prose was that so many large sections were told in a summerized fashion, as opposed to being written in a way that gave the reader more connection with the story, a great example of the wrong side of the 'show vs tell' writers are warned against. Some historical facts were recited in a teacherly manner instead of being better incorporated into the story. There were A LOT of redundant areas where the reader repeated the exact same thing over and over and over, which greatly detracted from the story and made me wonder if word count had been an issue. One example would be when the parentage of a particular person was discussed between different characters in one chapter at least four times using nearly the same wording. There were a few historical points that I think were a bit off, and the accents could have more accurate. For example, the main character Lavinia is straight off the ship from Ireland but there is only one mention of her accent and it never shows through in her dialogue.

I was enthralled with the story, but the prose could have been more polished.
