Amazon.com Review
A couple of years ago, Richard Ford himself was included in this annual anthology with a personal--and funny--meditation on hunting with his wife. It's no surprise, then, that Ford, one of America's finest novelists (The Sportswriter), would turn to David Mamet, one of America's finest screenwriters and playwrights (Glengarry Glen Ross) to anchor his superlative collection of the year's best with a very personal and very funny meditation on a deer-hunting trip in Vermont to mark his 50th birthday. "As a hunter, of course, I am a fraud," Mamet admits without much prodding; as an observer of the macho milieu, however, he hits the bull's-eye: "To hunt deer in thick woods in a snowstorm is one of the most beautiful, happiest, things that I know. I was enjoying it so much," he confesses, "that I missed the deer," which were passing in front of him a mere 20 yards away.

If Mamet missed his deer, Ford misses nothing, bagging trophy pieces on Ali (by David Remnick), Michael Jordan's finale (by David Halberstam), a Deep Sea Fishing Rodeo (by John McPhee), the end of Cal Ripkin's streak (by Thomas Boswell), bowling (by Steve Friedman), pool (by J.D. Dolan), and women's pick-up hoops (by Melissa King). Tradition--and seven decades of good craftsmanship--brings Shirley Povich's final Washington Post column into Ford's sights as well.

"There's just something in the American sensibility that values joining the often primal yet contrived acts of sport to the intensities and suave logics of well-made prose," writes Ford in his kick-off to the volume. "It seems to free us.... Plus reading sports may be the only reading for pleasure most Americans ever do." The Best American Sportswriting 1999 certainly adds to that. --Jeff Silverman

From Publishers Weekly
Among those profiled in this eclectic collection are a trophy hunter with a God complex, a Texas couple suing a local high school athletic director because their son failed to win a college scholarship and a squirrel-hunting immigrant who becomes the first Hmong elected to city office in Wisconsin. In short, these are not your father's sports stories. In fact, about the only throwback to traditional sports writing is the unhappy fact that, of the 17 essays chosen by novelist Ford (The Sportswriter, etc.), only one is by a woman (Melissa King on playing playground hoops), and none focuses on the current explosion in women's sports. Still, most of the writers assembled here, among them Simon Winchester of Conde Nast Traveler, Houston Press staffer Randall Patterson and Wisconsin English professor John Hildebrand, stand out not just for the captivating way they tell their stories, but for the way they avoid the trendy and overhyped subjects that tend to occupy newspaper sports sections and sports magazines. There are a few familiar topics and namesADavid Halberstam on Michael Jordan, Shirley Povich on recent baseball feats and David Remnick on Muhammad AliAbut for the most part, this collection offers engrossing studies of lesser-known folks whose quirks and flaws are more interesting than their athletic abilities. From Library Journal
Through various incarnations, several "Best of" sportswriting collections have effectively mirrored the major sporting events of much of the American century. The present series' latest volume presents some of last year's expected characters (the heroic face-off between McGwire and Sosa), but what makes this anthology so interesting is the coverage given to nonspectator or minor sports by this year's guest editor, novelist Ford. In addition to the expected baseball and football pieces, there are a number of stories on hunting and fishing and an editorial leaning toward remaking spectating when it comes to sports. The contributors include John McPhee, Adam Gopnik, David Mamet, and Jonathan Miles. In the early days of sportswriting collections, many, if not all, of the selections were drawn from daily newspapers. The changing face of journalism is evident in this collection as only three of the 17 stories come from the daily press. There is one constant, however. Shirley Povich, a Washington Post sports writer and editor who began in the 1920s, had one of his stories selected from the work of the last year of his life. With a memorable introductory essay by Ford, this anthology is recommended for sports collections in school and public libraries.AWilliam O. Scheeren, Hempfield Area H.S. Lib., Greensburg, PA

Could have been longer
By A Customer
Hard to believe Amazon.com can't keep their years straight when it comes to reviewing this series. Anyway, the latest collection of sports writing was all right but nothing special by the usual high standards. It's a smaller collection than normal, and there are a few hunting and fishing pieces that I couldn't get into. That didn't leave a whole lot, although what was left was pretty darn good. I particularly enjoyed the articles on the parents of a benched high school football player suing the school, and on the 1998 World Cup.

Sporyswriting as Literature
By Brian D. Rubendall
The 1999 edition of "The Best American Sports Writing" has plenty of moments that will enthrall avid sports fans and even those less avid who merely like a good story. The series is a national treasure, which collects the best sports related writing every year and puts it into a single easy-to-read volume. The sports included run the gamut from the traditional team sports of baseball and football to more extreme examples like mountaineering. The main requirement for inclusion is great writing, and that's wht this series delivers consistently.
The best articles in the 1999 edition include Thomas Boswell's account of Cal Ripken's voluntary stoppage of his historic games played streak, Steve Friedman's biographical article on tormented 2nd generation professional bowler Pete Weber, Allen Abel's hilarous tribute to the long-folded World Hockey Association, and Adam Gopnik's insightful explantion of why World Cup Soccer fails to excite American fans. As always, the quality of the reporting means that even if you have only a margainal interest in the sport described, you'll still find it entertaining.
Overall, another fine entry in an outstanding series.

Home Run, Touchdown, Triumph
By Avid Reader
If you've liked previous editions, you'll enjoy this one, too. Same formula, and a seemingly inexhaustible supply of human-interest stories from the sports world. Choosing a favorite or two is tough, but I love the bittersweet ones, such as about one of baseball's great "bonus baby" players who never panned out, or about the insane distance bicycle racer.

I'm delighted to see an article from a blog breaking through the "print barrier" in the series. I'm a little disappointed that so many stories came from the NY Times, as well as a couple of plain things from the Washington Post. A little more edge and a little less conventionality has been nice in other editions.

International Cash Management (Treasury Management and Finance Series), by Lex van der Wielen, Willem van Alphen, Joost Bergen, Phillip Li

Modern cash management is no longer restricted to the management of business cash flows and account balances. Nowadays, a cash manager is the treasurer s right-hand man, who, in addition to these core tasks, also bears responsibility for the management of interest and foreign exchange risks and for some of the company s corporate finance operations. In addition, he plays an important supporting role towards the working capital management of the company. This book provides an overview of the position and duties of the modern cash manager in an international company. In addition, it deals with the most important instruments used in contemporary cash management. It covers a cash manager s regular duties, such as the daily management of account balances and the conclusion of transactions in the financial markets. Examples are presented of several types of cash flow forecasts and an overview is provided of all relevant financial products. Furthermore, extensive attention is devoted to the establishment of a proper cash management infrastructure for the company. This includes setting up an (international) account structure, cash pools (international or otherwise), payment and collection factories and a netting system. Finally, a description is provided of the cash manager s role as a company adviser in relation to the management of its working capital. This book is primarily intended for (future) professionals in the corporate treasury and banking sectors, who wish to gain practical knowledge about the subject. It is also suitable for students who need to obtain a broad general overview of cash management as part of their business economics and administration studies. Fabulous treasury book
By Steven Bragg
This is one of my all-time favorite how-to business guides. The authors are very methodical in working you through every aspect of not only cash management, but also treasury management in general. The examples are frequent, highly topical, and closely tied back to the text. The book is lacking in cash management and treasury controls, but is otherwise as nearly perfect as you can get.

Top book in Payments and Cash Management
By M. Rom Colthoff
There are few books covering the topics of payments and cash management in a clear and understandable way for practitioners; bankers, consultants and business analysts. Well, this book does. The only critical remark I can make is that the title is misleading, since the book covers more than cash management. And that's exactly what makes the book so attractive. Strongly recommended!

Highly recommend.
By GidgetC
I was new to smocking, but not to sewing in general, and purchased this book to learn smocking techniques. It is not for a beginner, but with some trial and error, you can figure it out and create a beautiful finished product. I cut my teeth on the bishop on the cover, and it turned out wonderfully- again, my first smocked item ever. The classic heirloom sewing techniques aren't cosmic or incredibly hard to do, and you get to feel like you are sewing something in the nicest way possible. The instructions are very complete, but if you are new to this magazine, you may did they aren't laid out in the most logical order- the steps are laid out in three different locations within the magazine so you need to flip back and forth a lot, but after making one item, you'd learn the layout and not be taken by suprise or frustrated. Had I read all the instructions through carefully before beginning (like each pattern suggests) I would have saved myself a good but of heartache and googling techniques. Overall the best smocking resource I have purchased, along with Martha Pullen's Grandmother's Hope Chest. Highly recommend.

Something for everyone
By Theodora L. Norton
This magazine-style book truly has a project for every skill level and need, from super-simple tailored boy to ultra-priss. Alternate threads and materials are usually suggested and the directions are narrative and clear. Smocking doesn't really change much over the years, and neither do a baby's comfort levels, so it must be a real challenge to produce a new take while appealing to the traditional needleperson.

SOA with REST: Principles, Patterns & Constraints for Building Enterprise Solutions with REST (The Prentice Hall Service Technology Series

“This book illuminates the connection of the two domains--SOA and REST--in a manner that is concrete and practical, providing concise application to everyday architectural challenges. Fantastic!”

--Ryan Frazier, Technology Strategist, Microsoft

“...a tour de force that elegantly applies REST principles to the industry-standard SOA framework described in prior titles in this series.... This book is a must-read for anyone developing REST services.”

--Dave Slotnick, Enterprise Architect, Rackspace Hosting

“This book undoubtedly will help SOA to reap the benefits from the main value propositions of Web architecture….”

--Dr. Erik Wilde, Architect, EMC Corporation

“REST is so much more than just another type of interface implementation--SOA with REST shows how the ecosystem of service compositions changes as new opportunities arise for service composition architecture designs. A comprehensive guide and a must-read for any serious IT architect considering REST-style services for application architectures.”

--Roger Stoffers, Solution Architect, Hewlett Packard

“Service-orientation and REST both are architectural styles that are cornerstones of modern applications and cloud computing. Both aim to deliver scalable, interoperable solutions, but their different roots don’t always make them a natural fit. SOA with REST explains how the two styles can work together in enterprise environments. It discusses a design process for a services portfolio that meets the goals of SOA and at the same time designs services that comply with the established REST constraints. It also shows pragmatic approaches to meet enterprise-grade requirements with the REST programming style but relaxes constraints where necessary.”

--Christoph Schittko, Director of Cloud Strategy, Microsoft

“An excellent repertoire of service-oriented patterns that will prove handy when solving problems in the real world. The REST perspectives and principles will provide complete coverage of modern-day Web 2.0 style approaches. Highly recommended.”

--Sid Sanyal, IT Architect, Zurich Financial Services

“An inspirational book that provides deep insight into the design and development of next-generation service-oriented systems based on the use of REST. This book clarifies the convergence of SOA and REST with no-nonsense content that addresses common questions and issues head-on. An essential ‘instrument of modern service implementation’ and a powerful body of knowledge for software designers, architects, and consultants.”

--Pethuru Raj, Ph.D., Enterprise Architecture (EA) Consultant, Wipro Consulting Services

“REST and SOA are two of the most misunderstood terms in the software industry over the past decade. Yet the REST architectural style coupled with modern RESTful framework implementations provides a scalable and reliable approach to SOA. This book covers all you need to know about how to take the principles of REST and apply them in small and large SOA developments. If you are familiar with REST and thinking about SOA, then you need this book. If you have not considered REST in your SOA work, then this book is for you, too. Covering concepts of both REST and SOA, as well as design patterns and when to use them, the book is a wonderful companion and a good tool for architects and engineers.”

--Dr. Mark Little, CTO JBoss, Red Hat

“Unlike many other texts on the subject, SOA with REST is a well-rounded, easy-to-read narrative, including real-world case studies that appeal to both developers and analysts. This makes it an indispensable source for any SOA practitioner or any professional who is planning to initiate an SOA project.”

--Theodore T. Morrison, Certified SOA Analyst, CSM, Geocent, LLC

“SOA and REST are two very important architectural styles for distributed computing. SOA is successfully adopted by most enterprises, and the REST style is getting more attention from both researcher and industry users. The book SOA with REST introduces a new architectural style that is ingeniously combining both SOA and REST styles and clearly reveals how SOA and REST can work together to generate successful enterprise SOA strategies with REST, along with guidance for making architecture design decisions. This book is a bible of best practices for designing and implementing SOA architecture with REST. It is a must-have reference book for both IT practitioners and researchers.”

--Longji Tang, FedEx IT Senior Technical Advisor, Ph.D. in CSSE

The Definitive Guide to Building Web-Centric SOA with REST

The World Wide Web is based on the most successful technology architecture in history. It has changed how we view, access, and exchange information and, with the advent of REST, it has also provided us with compelling ways to build and improve automation solutions. REST provides a great deal of guidance to ensure that an architecture and its automation logic are technically sound, though it is still your responsibility to build services that actually add value to your business.

SOA with REST is the first comprehensive tutorial and reference for designing and building RESTful services as part of service-oriented solutions and in conjunction with service-oriented architecture (SOA). This book demonstrates that REST is not only a suitable medium for building truly service-oriented solutions, but also that the service-oriented architectural model is a necessary foundation for REST technology architectures to realize their full business potential.

The authors provide thorough mapping of REST constraints and architectural goals with service-orientation principles and SOA characteristics. Using real-world examples, they show how to leverage REST’s simplicity, flexibility, and low overhead without compromising the power or manageability of service-oriented solutions and architectures.

This book will be valuable to IT architects, developers, and any practitioner seeking to use SOA and REST together.

Review

“This book illuminates the connection of the two domains--SOA and REST--in a manner that is concrete and practical, providing concise application to everyday architectural challenges. Fantastic!”

--Ryan Frazier, Technology Strategist, Microsoft

“SOA can be done in many different ways, and REST has become the most visible newcomer in the space of potential implementation frameworks. This book illustrates what architects and developers need to know about RESTful SOA and most importantly drives home the main point that REST makes as a style for SOA: It is all about designing service ecosystems and providing clients an easy way to use resources in those ecosystems and even connect them across individual services. This book undoubtedly will help SOA to reap the benefits from the main value propositions of Web architecture: decentralization, loose coupling, connectedness, self-describing services, and service interfaces that are independent from service implementations.”

--Dr. Erik Wilde, Architect, EMC Corporation

“SOA with REST is a tour de force that elegantly applies REST principles to the industry-standard SOA framework described in prior titles in this series. The book provides useful guidance to practitioners while staying true in form and spirit to the REST constraints defined in Roy Fielding’s thesis. The chapters on RESTful contract design in and of themselves justify the cost of purchase. This book is a must-read for anyone developing REST services.”

--Dave Slotnick, Enterprise Architect, Rackspace Hosting

“An excellent repertoire of service-oriented patterns that will prove handy when solving problems in the real world. The REST perspectives and principles will provide complete coverage of modern-day Web 2.0 style approaches. Highly recommended.”

It Depends On How You Read the Series
By Alfredo
Take SOA: Principles of Service Design, Service Oriented Architecture: Concepts, Technology, and Design, and this book, and subtract the conceptual intersection and what you're left with is about a 3 chapter book or even just a lengthy article.

However, if you will only read this book then you get all the benefits also covered in the two formerly stated publications, since their subject matter is not the prime and ultimate objective.

This series is a slaughtering house for horses in that any horse unfortunate enough to pass through will not just be beaten but beaten continuously.

The characteristics and principles of SOA design are so severely repeated throughout this series that it borders on psychological harassment.

If you're interested in SOAP, read the SOA with .NET book, if you're interested in REST then just read this book. If you're only interested in the conceptual and objective goals of SOA, then just read the design and concept books.

I deducted two stars, not for this book because it deserves 4 with a loss of one because of a lack of technical implementation, but because of the fluffy characteristic of this series.

Very Well Done!!!!
By T Anderson
This book does what it patterns book should do. It defines a language for enterprises to use to develop SOA solutions using REST.

The book starts off with two chapters. The first chapter is an introduction and shows how the book is laid out. Chapter 2 introduces two case studies that are used throughout the book to provide examples of how the patterns can be applied to real-world situations.

After the first two chapters of the book is broken down into six parts. I have listed the parts below with their associated chapters.

Chapter 1: Introduction

Part I: Fundamentals Chapter 3: Introduction to Services
Chapter 4: SOA Terminology and Concepts
Chapter 5: REST Design Constraints and Goals

Part II: RESTful Service-Orientation
Chapter 6: Service Contracts with REST
Chapter 7: Service-Orientation and REST

Part III: Service-Oriented Analysis and Design with REST
Chapter 8: Mainstream SOA Methodology
Chapter 9: Analysis and Service Modeling with REST
Chapter 10: Service-Oriented Design with REST

Part IV: Service Composition with REST
Chapter 11: Fundamental Service Composition with REST
Chapter 12: Advanced Service Composition with REST
Chapter 13: Service Composition with REST Case Study

In Chapter 14, Design Patterns for SOA with REST, the author introduces seven new patterns. They include Reusable Contract, Lightweight Endpoint, Entity Linking, Endpoint Redirection, Content Negotiation, Idempotent Capability, and Uniform Contract. All of the new patterns are nicely tied to currently existing patterns that appear in the author's other books.

One of my favorite parts of the book is that it shows the relationship between SOA and REST. REST architecture provides a medium by which service oriented architecture can be implemented. This book does an excellent job of clearly defining the relationship.

Another thing I really like the book is the low-level granularity that it goes into when describing the pattern languages Used for implementing SOA using REST.

The author does a great job of showing how the goals of the rest architectural style meet certain quality attributes. Quality attributes he covers include performance, scalability, simplicity, modifiability, visibility, portability, and reliability.

I would have liked to see more coverage of security. Although mentioned several times, it was not really covered. It would have been nice to see them cover hash-based message authentication code as one of the patterns used in REST architecture. Maybe it isn't used as widely as it appears to be used.

The author does have a Visio stencil available for download that includes all of the modeling symbols used in his SOA books, but does not appear to have updated with the REST symbols yet.

I believe this book did a nice job of filling in an existing gap in the SOA pattern books.

All in all if you are considering learning REST or SOA you should make this book part of your library. I felt the author did a good job of introducing both SOA and REST in the beginning of the book, so this book is perfect for the beginner. I also felt the author went deep enough into detail to make this book valuable to the more experienced developer.

Most importantly I feel the author nailed the goal of a pattern book and accomplished creating a reference for the language of SOA with REST for development teams to have a common vocabulary to communicate with.

I have been on the architecting end of service-oriented applications for seven years now, and have had my share of ReST based implementations. I can say that I have not come across a book nor article as enlightening as this. Forget 50 Shades ...I am more than satisfied with this book!
