This collection of essays maps the intellectual biography of one of Anglo-America's brighter stars of the second half of the 20th century. An anthropologist, psychiatrist, cyberneticist, and epistemologist, (to name only the primary traditional disciplines informing Bateson's mind), the thinking is crisp, direct, demanding, and about as good an introduction to the later works as we might expect. The Theory of the Double Bind in invaluable, and its history began with Bateson and his research colleagues. This book is a must for one who wishes to grasp the early convergences of the social sciences, the natural sciences, cybernetics, and analytical philosophy into what has become, arguably, the most forceful and relentless body of thought guiding the more promising of late modern social theory's innovations as well as climatology and ecological sciences.

'terra Infirma' mercillessly assails the fortifications that are built up around geography and art and their epistemelogical certainties. Yet there is so much more to this book than a long and noisy siege of old Jerichos. It refuses to be infiltrated by art that merely illustrates its arguments and goes beyond mapping out a ground for understanding identity, belonging and cultural geography. What makes for its content is what Rogoff calls an "interlocution" with a type of art that "constitutes" the viewing subject and engages with "geography in crisis". For me, the chapter on 'luggage' and its attendant sign systems is the most brilliantly argued and the journalistic approach to Ana Mendieta's 'silueta' series, in a chapter on 'borders', the most evocative of the violence inherent in contemporary art. There are also a ruthless deconstruction of 'mapping' and a sensitive historicisation of 'bodies' in Palestine/Israel. One can tell from this that 'terra infirma' does not neglect politics and is particularly attentive to feminist discourses. The 'terra firma' of this work is its skillful deployment of critical theory and art historical analyses amongst the chaos and devastation of the geographies that she has undone. But this is a love-hate affair with geography. One senses that she has chosen a "geographical arena" in which to play out her games of "unlearning" and "unframing" because geography is such a fascinating and multifaceted spectacle but also because as an estabished old gladiator school of traditional learning it is ripe to be torn apart and remade over and over. As a journey it never arrives, which is as the author intends, but get shaken up by it along the way, it is a seismic trip.

Amol Nayak has been working with Java/JEE for the last seven years and is currently employed at a leading investment bank working on some cutting-edge technologies, predominantly open source. Job well Done

Instant MongoDB book review
The new whole concept of NoSQL databases amaze me, so I was looking for a good book to start learning about them. After much research I have found MongoDB is one of the leading NoSQL databases and easy to learn.
I have come across this book which is good for a starter to NoSQL database MongoDB.
Apparently this book has been written for a newbie to NoSQL database and suffice the requirements of a new professional joining this field. The book is well written and edited and keeps interested in the subject which is a big attribute for any writer.
This book explains other good concepts about Indexing and Map Reduce features which are also integral to NoSQL databases.
The operators and iterations are well explained.
As I mentioned earlier this book is good for starters and lacks high level content about sharding concept which is integral part of MongoDB Architecture and base for all NoSQL databases.
Interestingly the book is not in a chapter format but is still keeps you engaged.
Overall for a starter this book can hook you up to MongoDB database which I will say is Mission accomplished.

An excellent Primer for MongoDB Developers

Congratulations to author Amol Nayak and Packt publishing for publishing an excellent book on MongoDB. The book can not only be useful to a novice MongoDB developer but excellent "quick reference" for experienced people too. It is a well written book for Developers and hence the title should be "Instant MongoDB for Developers".

I like the lucid and fluid language used through out the book. The information given flows seamlessly from paragraph to paragraph and chapter to chapter. The part describing schema design and comparison between relational schema design and MongoDB schema design makes this important concept very clear. There are couple of minor typos in the the book, unfortunately I didn't note down the location.

The book covers lots of ground in 72 pages, good stuff! They should include couple of more examples under aggregates. Also the section on MapReduce should have more details, it seems the author was trying to rush towards final pages of the book. The paragraph explaining Reduce function is quite confusing.

This is a short book (only 72 pages) but all its contents are recommended if you haven't any idea of NoSql databases and MongoDB in particular or if you need a fast guide for create and use a MongoDB database.

The book have a lot of examples of differents functions of MongoDB, like a CRUD operations (create, read, update and delete), aggegation framework and mapReduce functionality.
Maybe I miss more information about replicaset and sharding, two essential features for MongoDB.

The book is especially recommended for Developers and Administrators, wants to know a new type of database that are very recommended for store large amounts of data.

Simply the best. Too bad the publisher has let it go out of print.

This is the best studio lighting textbook I have ever found. It's well written, concise, and well illustrated. Kolb and Overturf do an excellent job of explaining everything from the most basic lighting setup to the most complex. Natural light, hot lights and strobes are all covered. In addition there's a significant amount of information on set construction and excellent suggestions for designing your own studio. Best of all Kolb has put a great deal of effort into explaining why one would want to choose a particular approach to lighting a subject. The underlying message being - just because you can doesn't mean you should.

Unfortunately the publisher has chosen not to reprint this book. As the current used prices indicate - it's in demand. Someone in the McGraw-Hill sales department needs to take notice. Too bad they're not because I'm trying to adopt a new book for my large format photography and lighting class and no other seems to fit the bill quite as well.
