Engineers, Henry Petroski observes, are sometimes their own worst enemies, at least so far as communicating their work to the general public is concerned. Some engineers, of course, have been exceptions. One of the unlikely heroes of Petroski's Remaking the World, an entertaining foray into some of engineering's finest (and, on occasion, less exalted) moments, is Karl August Rudolf Steinmetz, who combined a great talent for design and engineering with a keenly practiced flair for self-promotion. Another is Washington Gale Ferris, the inventor of the Ferris wheel, who concocted several dangerous eyesores before arriving at the design familiar to amusement-park patrons.

Successful at explaining themselves or not, engineers are largely responsible for the world as we know it, and Petroski examines their work to discuss how good design and technology combine to produce the desired results. That combination involves much trial and error, and, as Petroski writes, "artifacts from paper clips to steamships evolve by removing some real or perceived failure of their ancestors to achieve unqualified success." A disappointingly flat collection of musings on engineering history. Petroski's concern, as in previous works such as The Pencil (1990), is the interdependence of engineering and society--the role of engineers in shaping the world we live in, but also the fact that engineering's achievements are driven not purely by technology but by economics, politics, and culture. But in demonstrating these truths through chronicles of great engineered projects and portraits of interesting engineers like Isambard Kingdom Brunel, he largely leaves out the ingredient that would really enlighten the reader--the engineering itself. ``The tapering at the top of the building demanded some especially tricky structural engineering,'' Petroski hints, with regard to Malaysia's Petronas Twin Towers, the world's tallest. But he leaves it at that, satisfied to provide a sketchy account of the building's materials and facilities, and a slight chronology of the project. Similarly, ``improvements in tunneling, such as the chore of getting rid of the soil,'' would seem to be a main topic in the history of the Channel Tunnel, but that phrase appears merely as a transition in Petroski's lifeless parade of 19th-century tunnel plans. Without using his tantalizing examples--pioneering soil mechanicist Karl Terzaghi and the rise and decline of the transatlantic steamship--to explain any engineering principles, they remain little more than aimless encyclopedia entries. Perhaps this is because they were written for a scientifically oriented audience (most appeared in American Scientist), with the intention of highlighting the historical and social context. Still, only occasionally, as in a chapter using the various uses of wireless communication to illustrate the unpredictable evolution of technology, do they seem to ascend above the assembled facts to a salient idea. Petroski is a little petulant about the respect engineering gets (as from the executors of Alfred Nobel's bequest), but he's squandered an opportunity to propagate a real sense of the science and labor of builders and inventors. For Petroski Fans Only

This is a collection of articles written for Petrowski's monthly column in American Scientist magazine. Many are brief biographies of 19th-century engineers; a (very) few look (very) briefly at particular pieces of historical engineering (an article on the Ferris wheel is probably the best); others are ruminations on such hazards of the engineering practice as the stress that keeps them up at night and their failure to be awarded Nobel prizes. These seem quite satisfactory articles for a magazine column but they are slender stuff for a book. And Petroski's tendency to return to the same subjects, pardonable in a monthly column, becomes repetitive when the columns are collected. All but die-hard Petroski fans can skip this one

Excellent Read

This is a fine tome about engineering for those of us who scraped thru algebra! Should be required reading for *every* high school student. It gives a lot of basic information in understandable writing. Such as how did radio get to where it is today. Because of yacht racing... Now if that doesn't tease the brain, I don't know what else will...

Spendid short essays - (a must for any Petroski fan)

I'm like those awful teachers who rarely give "10s" (although Petroski's The Pencil would get a 10!) Despite his protestation that these are slightly altered essays for the "American Engineer", as I recall, - he'd be hurt to realize that it's not common reading for most of us. For me it was all new territory - not covered in prior Petroski books and full of the interesting mix of social history and engineering history that he does so well. The order is arbitrary - except for the first chapter which is a bit autobiographical and perhaps should be read first - but I mostly skipped to topics I felt like reading and did them in my own order. My only criticisms are that a) the essays have some but could have used a bit more visuals - diagrams or photographs and b) many chapters - maybe not all but many - could easily have supported treatment at greater length. But I am a very tough grader. Also maybe at hardcover prices the publisher could be chided for not including more of the colums, this is a selection from thirty or so - and I doubt that Petroski was the parsimonious one! (but you can grab it while Amazon.com has it at 30% off) Its definitely nice to have this collection of columns from a journal I don't ever see, wrapped up in one volume.

From a pragmatic skeptic: Fantastic!

First my background: I am 59 years old, and suffered recurring back pain since I was 20 years old... when I stupidly (youthfully?) carried a GM automatic transmission up a flight of stairs, from a basement, and loaded it in a van. When I got back to my destination, I could not get out of the van. Well eventually I did, but needed to lie on my side for a couple of days until the pain subsided.

Ever sine then... almost 40 years... I would eventually "go stupid" and not take precautions when lifting or moving something, or maybe, simply bending over to brush my teeth or shave, and my back would "go out". And each time I would rest, maybe lay on the floor on my side, then "get better" and go on.

Flash forward to two weeks ago: I was in a rush to get the outdrive of my motorboat off... it weighs 97 pounds, and was stuck. I could have gone in the house and put on my Mueller spined lumbar support... but didn't. Well of course we know what happened... but it was different this time. The damage was far more severe than ever before, gradually causing me the most pain I had ever endured in my life. When I had to get out of bed, I barely could... it was literally torture. I was in awe of it.

I thought I got better after a couple of days, but then the it got worse again. I went to the ER, where they prescribed 800 MG Ibuprophens every 8 hours, and percocet "as needed" for pain. The pain was so intense that the percocet barely cut the edge off. Getting in and out of the car was probably the most difficult physical and painful task of my life. I tried sleeping on the floor, I tried sleeping on the couch, with my back brace on. I got worse and worse, and went to Urgent Care just last Friday (It is Tuesday). I spent 12 hours on the floor Saturday, using a "bottle" so I didn't have to get up. They now prescribed a new antinflammatory, Nabumatone, and a muscle relaxant. I thought that Saturday this was the answer, because even though I was on the floor, I could "actually" get up two times and walk for 5 minutes... until the pain and wobbly feeling had me crawling back on the floor. Sunday was the same. I knew I would have to go see a specialist, and could not imagine there was any other hope than surgery... and worried that this was going to be my life now: Constant, daily, unrelenting pain.

I point all this out so that readers can understand "where I'm coming from", when I talk about this book. And also, to add, I watched every professional and amature youtube video on solving back pain, and excersises, and so on... and all the advice about sleeping, sitting and standing. Nothing worked.

Then, yesterday, Monday, a friend and co-worker of my wife's told her of her 20 years plus of back problems, and three surgeries, and meds, and said the only thing that helped her was "7 Steps to a Pain-Free Life". She said that if you follow the exercises religiously, it will eliminate or remove most or all of the pain, as it did for her. Now I am a skeptic, and a pragmatist... but that sounded good, so I came here and read the reviews. What did I have to lose by trying this book? I ordered it, and rather than wait, I also bought the ebook. For a total of both of $38, that would be nothing if it worked, and a tiny risk if it did not.

So I took three hours Monday afternoon and carefully read the background, anatomy lessons, care and cause sections, and of course, the exercise routine. I have to say the background explanations by McKenzie really appealed to me: I want to know the "why" of anything suggested, rather than just being told "what do do", and his explanations made practical, logical sense to me. And with the insistent suggestion that one follow the instructions to the letter, I did just that when I started the routine.

Well as I did the routine the first time, my pain.... which was spread from the center lower back to my upper right buttock, seemed to move to my center bottom back: Just as was predicted COULD happen, and why this was good. And then, for the first time over a week, I was able to stand! My lower back muscles were sore... but totally tolerable, and probably about 1/20 of what they had been. More importantly, I could stay standing, and walk around. Remember just before the exercises, I could only stand for maybe 5 minutes until the pain was unbearable. Now I found myself walking around for over an hour and a half. I did wear my Mueller back brace, to help support my lower spine... I didn't want to accidentally re-injure what was apparently getting to fix.

Sure I had soreness... I had beat the hell out of everything down there, and the exercises probably add a bit of new soreness at first. But by the second set... two hours later... they were easier, I could move further during them, and felt even better afterwards. I was able to sleep in my own bed last night, and more importantly, get out of it relatively pain-free.

So I'm going to stick with this routine, and when and if the benefits continue, move on to the other exercises, and follow all the advice for life-habits that will help avoid this ever happening again. And I'll post an update when and if this is all over for me, or if it turns out it does not help at some point, or something else arises needing comment.

Sorry for the long and overly-wordy review. But I know from personal experience, if you are in the agony so many of us are, you both have the time and desire to know what might work to fix the problem, and maybe why, and this book and method, I think, will do both.

Robin McKenzie Method DOES WORK IF. . .

I'm VERY surprised to see the above 1-star rating on this book for the McKenzie Method self-physical therapy because my experiences were incredibly positive:

---realigning my pelvis after injuring my left foot's plantar fasciitis stepping on a carpet threshold screw
---unknotting my right side neck muscles that caused scalp pain/headaches when trying to sleep

But, of course:

1--I followed Robin McKenzie's disclaimer, repeated before every exercise set, to consult a professional MD or physical therapist/chiropractor if the pains are either first time issues OR if exercises don't produce results within a few days.

2--Also, I followed his exercise directions EXACTLY, as he constantly stresses.

My imbalance and pains literally MELTED AWAY BY DAY 3!

I had used my library's older book edition so was thrilled to buy this updated 2014 edition with added shoulder pain exercises.

Don't just listen to me. Any Google search for Robin McKenzie's legacy will do a far better promotion than I ever could.

Anybody who thinks this exercise method is only 1 star is sorely (pun intended) misdirected or skewed.

Meanwhile, I'm thrilled to be pain-free, well-rested, and richer from all the co-pays I have saved by ending my ineffective chiro/podiatrist therapy sessions.

... few months ago I was traveling and under a great deal of stress and the neck issue flared up ...

I have had chronic neck issues over the years and a few months ago I was traveling and under a great deal of stress and the neck issue flared up and it was the worse it has ever been. I started up with a new chiropractor when I returned home and he recommended the McKenzie exercises. Of course fool that I am I didn't take him up on it for about the first month of therapy. This week I started them and good grief!!!! I am amazed. The progress I have made in less than one week is phenomenal.

If not, how does it deviate and how might people's ability to engage in it be improved?

It examines philosophical and theoretical treatments of the mental processes that support conditional reasoning. A modern "classic"

Geary's volume is my standard go-to source reader for medieval classes. The sources chosen lend themselves to a number of great pairings and cover a wide variety of key themes within the medieval period. Covering both the Early, High, and Late periods, the collection is useful for most regions and touch on the growth of the state, the institutional church, law, high culture, and more. I'm not sure if I sat down and came up with my "ideal source reader" that I would have something that much different than this volume.

This text presents a unified approach to the structure determination of organic compounds based largely on mass spectrometry, infrared (IR) spectroscopy, and multinuclear and multidimensional nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. The key strength of this text is the extensive set of practice and real-data problems (in Chapters 7 and 8). Even professional chemists use these spectra as reference data. Spectrometric Identification of Organic Compounds is written by and for organic chemists, and emphasizes the synergistic effect resulting from the interplay of the spectra. This book is characterized by its problem-solving approach with extensive reference charts and tables.

The 8th edition of this text maintains its student-friendly writing style - wording throughout has been updated for consistency and to be more reflective of modern usage and methods. Chapter 3 on proton NMR spectroscopy has been overhauled and updated. Also, new information on polymers and phosphorus functional groups has been added to Chapter 2 on IR spectroscopy.

Reference vs. Teaching Material

This book has wonderful charts and tables for quick referencing, however it is sorely lacking in demonstrations and worked out examples for students new to the subject. The chapters are painfully slow and complex when explaining the theory behind the spectrometric methods and effects on classes of molecules. In short, don't use this book to learn the material unless you already know it. It is a comprehensive reference, but not an effective textbook to teach from.

Excellent excercises...

It's an OK book if you are a novice in the Spectroscopy determination area, but a very nice book if it's going to be used as a reference book. It's very handy and explains the principles of the Spectroscopic and Spectrometric determinations in a very understandable way. Moreover, the excercises are challenging, making this book and excellent tool for those students interested in learning how to determine structures out of some spectra, although the spectra sometimes are so clean that they don't correspond with the one's that are taken by routine. The weak points of this book are the IR chapter and the lack of a UV chapter explaining various useful techniques for structural determination such as ORD and CD. The NMR section is just OK, but there are more details to be explained in the 2-D NMR NOESY, TOCSY and ROESY. I think the Mass Chapters are the best that any single book has offered to me so far to understand quite easily how powerful is the GCMS as a tool for the Structural Determination of Organic Compounds.

Great material, regular text...

The book is subdivided into only 3 of the 4 classical methods for spectrometric identification of compounds: IR, MS, and finally NMR (covering 1H, 13C and very little of 19F and 31P). UV is left out in this edition, so maybe getting a hold of the old edition's UV chapter (which is extremely well-written) might be desired. The MS and the IR chapters are also well-written and explained out. It is in the main technique (NMR) that the author fails to deliver the subject in a straightforward manner and lacks what I think is most important in this field: a large number of exercises and problems.
