For most of his life, Leben struggled with alcohol and narcotics, and he was suspended by the UFC for nine months for testing positive for performance-enhancing drugs. About the Author
Chris Leben is a ten-year veteran of the Ultimate Fighting Championship. While growing up in Portland, Oregon, he became interested in mixed martial arts at an early age. After being a participant on first season of The Ultimate Fighter, Leben went on to put together a 22–12 record and become a fan favorite before retiring in January 2014. Leben currently lives and coaches MMA fighters in San Diego, California.

Daniel J. Patinkin is a Chicago-born writer and businessman. His unique career has spanned the real estate, finance, education, and entertainment industries. He earned a BA in English and history from Indiana University and an MFA in producing from the University of Southern California. The Crippler is his first book. He lives in New York City.

another dull expose'.

What a surprise!!! Heard about this book while eavesdropping in the gym..there was a lot of buzz about "The Crippler ". I went to Amazon and
read about it and promptly ordered one for myself. I COULD NOT PUT THIS BOOK DOWN. I expected it to be about MMA as blood sport, i.e. another dull expose'....NO, it was more about the humanity (and sometimes the endured inhumanity) of this fighter's life--his struggles, his addictions, his triumphs, his hard-to-believe-but-true life experiences--it is about more than just a jaw-breaking uppercut or a kick-to- the-head
(although there are many of those), its a great read. Prepare to be "knocked out" by this AWESOME book.

Once again Dan Patinkin brings the noise AND the funk with his cagetastic tale of Chris Leben's unreal life experiences as an MMA fighter and beyond. If you like MMA and you like words on a page, "The Crippler" belongs in your life.

What a great book

Wow. This book was honest, revelatory, fun and impossible to put down. I learned a lot not just about Chris Leben and MMA but about the internal life of someone from incredibly adverse circumstances. I have the feeling that people will see more of themselves in Chris's story than they'd care to admit, though in Chris's case the demons are born of things that would derail most people before they got started. So many of the themes of the book are universal - trying to transcend one's past to build relationships, external competition vs. internal demons, the individual vs. the corporation, how the professional and the personal are intertwined. It's rare that a book is so unflinching in its look at a person's real life. It's like a window into someone's soul. Keep fighting Chris Leben.

A gem of a book that should be required reading for every teacher

As a seasoned educator, educational consultant, and teacher coach, I have been in countless classrooms over the years, including my own. I’ve ensured that I was up-to-date on the latest and greatest behaviour management strategies. I’ve read countless books on the topic. The bottom line is: some strategies and approaches look beautiful on paper but fail to work in the real-life classroom.

Rob's approach is positive and empowering, yet authoritative and sensible and, most importantly, it’s an approach that works! The stories he tells pull you in: not only to understand his thought process, but to create effective analogies so that the reader can completely understand his points.

While I read this book, I wanted to shout from the rooftop, ‘Yes, yes, yes!’ If every classroom teacher used these strategies and techniques in their classroom, they would definitely be able to take control of a noisy class.

Absolutely Amazing Book!

I have to say that I’m totally in love with this book! Anyone who knows me knows that I believe before we can even begin teaching, we need to take control of our classroom. This book explains everything that I believe in. And it is an easy book to read with some humor thrown in too.

The author breaks everything into 2 sections: establishing control and then step by step strategies to use in the classroom. Examples are given so you can “see” it in practice. The strategies are broken down and explained clearly. It is possible to try a strategy and get it in place and then trying another strategy. The classroom is always evolving and with different students’ personalities so not one particular strategy may be the perfect one for everyone’s classroom. It is like trying to develop a recipe that works best for you.

I believe this book needs to be on every teacher’s bookshelf, every administrator’s bookshelf, and one in the school resource library for those teacher’s who don’t own a copy! This is a must read for every beginning teacher as well as a refresher course for experienced teachers!

A great intro to a fun language

If you're looking for the Kernigan & Ritchie equivalent of C#, then look no further. Tom Archer describes the C# language concisely and accurately, and even makes comparisons to C, C++, and Java, to help those making the transition.
He describes everything: namespaces, classes, inheritance, interfaces, delegates, events, multithreading, and COM interoperability. What's great is that he does everything on the command line -- not a single Windows form, not even a message box. This allows him to focus on the language itself.
He even explains why the design team at Microsoft made certain decisions. For example, why use a garbage-collection system instead of a reference counting system? He describes the thought processes that went on at Microsoft, which is a really nice touch. His style is very easy and conversational, and I had a great time reading it.
There were a few areas which I would have liked him to explain in greater details (threading, for example), but considering that he had to learn the language while writing about it, he did a superb job.

Recommended, but probably shouldn't be your first C# book

The author does a good job of covering the topics. But, you will find no examples of how to design, or write, applications in this book. This book is what I call a "Theory of Operation" book that covers the inner workings of the C# environment. Like the Bible, it is very useful information, perhaps even essential information, but sometimes dull reading -- at least it was for me -- I enjoy more reading about how to use a tool that how a tool is designed and built. But, understanding the tool helps you to understand better how to use it. This book is cearly a book on how C# works -- rather than how to use C# to develop applications.
The book has listings that are in a rather large font with generous vertical spacing. It is about 400 pages, but could probably have been printed on 300-350 pages without any noticeable loss of readability.
This book, like most of the recent books, uses the preferred formatting of code, with the opening brace being on a separate line (I would illustrate, but the Amazon posting program would strip out the formatting). The listings are easy to read, but do take up a generous amount of space. On the other hand, I hate having to try to read C++ that is written like:

Drake interprets the rarefied and decadent 1970s French fashion scene Saint Laurent and Lagerfeld helped create with insight and vigor, as well as germane commentary on the collections and the trends they set. A period when couture was faltering and ready-to-wear rising, Drake crafts clear yin and yang portraits of the introverted, passive and magnetic Saint Laurent, and the exhibitionistic Lagerfeld, known for wearing high heels, sporting monocles or wielding a fan. Drake conducted more than 100 interviews in her scrupulous chronicle of fashion's most illustrious rivalry. Yves Saint Laurent, the charmed genius of effortless success, and Karl Lagerfeld, the patrician workhorse, engaged in a decades-long competition for hyperbolic headlines and jet-set celebrity, pitting their cliques against each other in bitch-slap feuds of sartorial splendor. Theirs is a world of glorious, hideous self-involvement, where heroin is an accessory, violent political unrest is an evening's amusement, and a close friend's suicide is, foremost, a contemptible blemish on an orchestrated image. Drake's subjects made their livings and their names dedicating themselves to the pursuit of surface perfection, and her comprehensive examination of their barbed, parallel arcs is appropriately superficial. These titanic designers crafted their personas as carefully as they put together their luxurious collections, and we come to know them as reflections in the mirror houses they built. Although their individual aesthetics and personal recriminations are unique, they are united in the opulent glory of their narcissistic myopia. Ultimately, Drake makes a good case for the extraordinary nature of their individual achievements and the revolutionary effect of their competitive energy on the fashion industry. LOVED THIS BOOK

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book- so much so, I found it hard to put down. SO MUCH fascinating information on subjects ranging from Fashion Design trends at that time and the many insuing changes to the many historical, business, social, and political issues contributung to the scene as it evolved. The book is juicy with incredible details--- really FUN to read!

Enjoyed the book's history of the 50's on forward and ...

As someone who enjoys art and fashion this book is an insider's look at how a fashion house is hatched. It takes fortitude, ego and creativity which is something that both YSL and Lagerfeld do not lack in. Enjoyed the book's history of the 50's on forward and how it affected both designers who became the word in fashion. Some live longer to tell the story as in Lagerfeld while others fall into the excesses of the day and nightlife.
