Heart of Africa is a specialized mission which helps African Christian leaders design effective programs in outreach, training, publishing, community development, discipleship, and church planting, and which assists Americans who want to make an effective investment in African Christian ministries. Has been a pastor and college/seminary professor for more than forty years, specializing in personal discipleship and small groups. He was most recently the teaching pastor at Northland, A Church Distributed, in Longwood, Florida. Currently, Mike and his wife Martha live in Wilmore, Kentucky, where he directs the work of Heart of Africa.

Getting to the Heart of Class Meetings

Henderson gives us the finest book on the theological and practical underpinnings for this institution that became to hallmark of early Methodism. Church leaders and scholars often point to the Wesleyan class meeting as the best model for how small group discipleship can be done. But, almost as often, key points of Wesley's purpose and method are overlooked (or ignored), causing people in the church to miss some of the most significant elements of genius in what Wesley put into practice.
D. Michael Henderson's book is about going back to the roots of the class meeting in order to genuinely understand what the early Methodists were doing and why. This book would be of particular use to those interested in contemporary small group ministry -- or those with an interest in Wesley or early Methodism.
Superb. This book gets my highest recommendation.

Almost there

I purchased this book largely based on the product description that mentioned the author discussing how to take Wesley's method and apply it today. I was disappointed that the author did not develop this side of the work at any depth. This is a significant drawback of this otherwise useful book.

On the positive side, I am new to Methodism and Wesley's ministry, so I found this very enlightening as a historical read about the how and why Wesley's method had the massive impact it did. I recommend it at that level, and if you would like to draw your own applications on how to apply this method. Last of all,I felt this work read more like a thesis than a guide to applying the concepts as the writing style is very formal.

Restoring the "Method" to Methodism

In the early 21st century church, there's a lot of interest in small groups. We've discovered that people are more likely to "belong" and "remain" in a fellowship when they are essentially connected to others in smaller, more intimate settings.

So far, so good. What we may not have "discovered" was actually formulated several centuries ago by John Wesley --- whose outline for spiritual growth centered on the use of structured meetings and personal accountability. "How doth your soul prosper?" is among Wesley's guidelines as an opening question for group sharing.

Today's effective and powerful Celebrate Recovery movement (launched at Saddleback but spreading everywhere) understands and applies these key principles to persons who want to overcome addictions and break the power of past habits. Yet is this not the case with everyone who finds new life? All of us need new patterns of health and righteousness; all of us need to break old patterns that are unhelpful and ultimately destructive.

Henderson has written an excellent explanation of the history, theology, and psychology of small-groups, as explained by Wesley.

The AUTHORIZED paperback edition! Avoid bad facsimiles!

This review is for the 'Diamond Jubilee Edition' of "Secret Teachings of All Ages" paperback issued by the Philosophical Research Society in 1989 (1st pb edition - all b&w) and reprinted in 2000 (54 illustrations are in color - the rest in b&w). This is the best trade edition available of this incredible book. This edition has all of the illustrations from the original text reproduced in good quality (all in b&w in the 1989 edition - 54 illustrations in color and the rest in b&w for the 2000 PB edition). It also includes a couple of foldouts and a vellum overlay.

There are many facsimile editions out currently with no illustrations, or with poor reproductions of them. If you want to truly enjoy this book, seek out one of the authorized editions that made an effort to reproduce the text with the incredible illustrations intact. The original hardcover limited edition is a few feet tall. The edition that I saw was hand-bound and hand-colored, apparently intended for a Masonic library. It would break your coffee table. It was issued in 'reduced size' - still not a small book - in hardcover and in this paperback edition from the Philosophical Research Society. These are the editions that faithfully reproduce the original. I can not speak for the other editions, but I've seen enough complaints to want to advise buyers to seek out these authorized editions from Philosophical Research Society, and to avoid the rest.

(ask the bookseller to check the ISBN if the listing isn't clear about the edition - don't get fooled into buying a bad facsimile!)

These are some of the authorized HC reprint editions issued by PRS over the years, any of which are worth buying. I've not seen each edition, but it seems they have color illustrations that are reprinted in b&w in the 1989 pb 'Diamond Jubilee Edition':
1977 Hardcover Edition (13 x 2 x 23 inches) from Philosophical Research Society ISBN is: 0-89314-538-6
1978 Golden Anniversary HC edition from Philosophical Research Society ISBN is: 0-89314-539-4
2008 reprint HC edition (12.8 x 1.8 x 18.5 inches) from Philosophical Research Society ISBN is: 0-89314-546-7

AVOID THE CREATE-SPACE EDITION (ISBN: 1-46101-313-5)! It is really bad, full of typos and the few pictures that are included look awful. The 'reader's guide edition' in PB from Tarcher (ISBN: 1-58542-250-9) only has half of the original illustrations, but has the unabridged text. There are a few other editions available that I have not reviewed.

So, if you are ordering online, ask the bookseller who the publisher is and check the ISBN before purchasing. This book is available in many, many editions, some are humungous and gorgeous books- some are poorly reproduced and edited.

This most wonderful book arrived impeccably in all ways; within the time frame expected, wrapped cleanly in plastic, and having a nice new crispness to the pages as I opened this marvelous book. I would highly recommend anyone interested in esotericism and any of the healing arts to get this for their collection, AND to order it from The Philosophical Research Society, where this book is published from.

beneficial book

I got this books for my daughter, who is going into PRE AP math next year in Middle School. I was hoping for something to prepare her for the jump in curriculum that will occur when she starts school. We really love this book. The instructions are clear, with a lesson plan at the start, to keep her on track for finishing the book over the summer. She also takes tests over the information she has been assigned, either weekly or biweekly. She has not asked for help with any of the new concepts, because the instructions are so detailed. The book is smaller than I had thought, but each page is packed with material. I plan to get another by this publisher for my younger son.

i bought this for my sister to help her prepare for 6th grade and this book is pretty good for a math workbook. Good explanation and very considerable price. This workbook had a few answerwrong. All math workbooks have errors,but this one has the least amount of errors i have ever seen

The play The Best Christmas Pageant Ever is produced annually in theaters, schools, and churches all over the world. Ms. Robinson has two daughters and three grandchildren.

This book is an annual read for me. I love the way the story brings out the humanism of the Savior's birth. It reminds me that His birth wasn't the sanitary and immaculately unrealistic birth we seem to imagine. Joseph and Mary were real people with real feelings and they lived in the real world. The stable would not have been clean and had an abundance of fresh clean straw. Not with the crowds of people and animals that were there to be taxed. Barbara Robinson did a wonderful job of bringing out the reality of the conditions surrounding the Savior's birth through her insight that is so beautifully woven into this book. It will remain on my annual list of books to read at Christmas time for as long as I can continue to read, and after that I hope to be able to listen to it from a recording of some sort. I highly recommend this book to everyone that is searching for a story that will bring out the true meaning of Christmas.

If you know anything at all about how things are usually done in churches, you'll howl over this.

This book has been out for years and I still reread it every few years. It's told from the prospective of a young girl, about 10 or 12 years old. Her church has a busybody who runs everything. When the woman gets hurt, they farm out all the things she's got going (the Potluck Supper, etc) to various other ladies. The mother of the girl who's telling the story gets stuck with the Christmas Pageant. Things are going as usual until the Herdmans show up. The Herdmans are the worst kids in the whole history of the world. Things go downhill from there, with hilarious results. But, in the end, everyone is shown a deeper meaning to the Christmas Story; one that they had forgotten in the bustle of busyness. It makes a good book to read and it also makes a good movie to watch. The movie stars Loretta Swit (of M*A*S*H) who plays the part of the woman forced to run a Christmas Pageant perfectly. Both book and movie are classics and old favorites in my family.

Do you like stories that are one of a kind special

Are you a family person. Do you like stories that are one of a kind special. If so then this story is one you need to have in your collection. The Herdmans are your typical terror in the town. This story show what happens when they finally understand what Christmas is all about. This classic story will have your kids asking for you to read it all over again. My family loves the pictures and descriptions of the charioteers. For example Alice Windalkin is described as being so clean in body and spirit she had detergent clean hands by the time she was two. I hope your family will love this book as much as mine.

Outstanding Repertoire Book

The Petroff Defense is not popular among amateur players and has the reputation of being a drawing defense. In the Preface of his new repertoire book on the Petroff, Sakaev concedes this point by noting that: "If White is an experienced player with a good grasp of theory, and he is in the mood to draw, then he should be able to share the point without too much problem." However, this "problem" should not be overstated, particularly for amateur players, who often lack the technique to make a draw in positions in which strong Grandmasters might agree to share the point. Moreover, there are plenty of possibilities for Black to complicate the position when playing against weaker players, although this sometimes may mean accepting a slight theoretical disadvantage.

This book presents Black with a complete repertoire after 1.e4. The first 65 pages or so are devoted to positions where White avoids the Petroff, either by not playing 2.Nf3, or by playing 3.Nc3 after 1.e5 e5 2.Nf3 Nf6. The remainder of the analysis is devoted to the Petroff itself, although Sakaev only covers the variations he have chosen for his repertoire. In selecting his repertoire, Sakaev has chosen those variations he believes to be objectively best for Black. Almost without exception, the recommended lines are the main lines played by such outstanding Petroff practitioners as Kramnik and Gelfand.

Sakaev is a strong Grandmaster and a well-respected theoretician, and it is in the presentation of theory that this book truly shines. The theory is up-to-date and includes a number of references to games played in 2011. There is a considerable emphasis on important theoretical games played in the last 5 years. One of the key features of this book is Sakaev's willingness to go beyond merely summarizing existing theory, and to suggest dozens - if not hundreds - of improvements.

Sakaev's explanations of positional and tactical themes are excellent, and should be accessible to anyone with an ELO of 2000 or so. Lower-rated players who are willing to work hard could also learn a lot from this book, and not just about opening theory. Given the importance of positional themes in many variations of the Petroff, this book could also be used as an advanced primer on positional chess.

Make no mistake, there is a lot of in-depth theory presented in this book. Sakaev often takes his analysis deep into the middlegame, and it is not unusual for him to end his analysis of a variation on move 20 (or even move 30 or more) in some of the more critical lines. For that reason, this book will chiefly appeal to players who are very serious about their opening preparation.

This book is well-organized and the two-column page format is reasonably attractive and easy on the eyes. Although it lacks an index of variations, the Table of Contents is sufficiently detailed to allow you to quickly find the variation you are looking for. For those familiar with recent repertoire books from Chess Stars, this book departs a little from the usual Chess Stars chapter format of first summarizing the mainlines of the repertoire, then going into more detail in a "Step by Step" section, and then presenting some illustrative games. Instead, Sakaev's book has some introductory comments and a conclusion in each chapter, but the first 240 pages of the book consist almost entirely of serious analysis. The last 45 pages of the book contains 21 complete games which were apparently selected for the instructive value. Most of the complete games are outstanding fights between top players in which Black lands his share of the blows.

Chess Stars, like Quality Chess, seems to be able to publish one outstanding opening book after another. I have a number of Chess Stars books and, in my opinion, this is one of their very best. I can hardly imagine a better book for a positional player looking for a solid repertoire against 1.e4.

Outstanding Repertroire by and Outstanding GM

This book is truly special. A world class GM analyzes the very best lines from an objective point of view. Often, Sakaev gives more than one solution to various white tries. Sakaev convincingly neutralizes the Nimzovich variation (5.Nc3), 3.d4, and 3.Ne5. His conclusion that black is absolutely OK in all variations is well supported by his investigation. As someone who has personal studied the Petroff for black by deeply examining hundreds of GM games, current theory, and with engines, I say with confidence that Sakaev's recommendations are rock solid. When reading through the book, I was surprised to see that I have already adopted most of his recommended lines via self-study. Thankfully, this book has been created for those without the time or inclination to delve into in the Petroff Labyrinth

He even covers the King's Gambit, the Bishop's Opening, Vienna Game. Again GM Sakaev recommends the best answers to these weak attempts by white and makes no compromises.

Buy this book and never lose to 1.e4 again.
