Must own for any XCOM fan into the process and art behind the game.

Amazing insight into the process and art of XCOM! I Collect video game art books and this is one of the best ive seen. This book contains many sketches and high resolution digital artwork images and gives info from the artist and devs on the thought process off design. As an added bonus this book is insanely cheap price for the high quality you get. I would highly recommend.

Playing it safe

The 192-page hardcover is split into several chapters and covers the previsualization, environments, aliens, ADVENT and XCOM.

In a world controlled by aliens, the new cities are now being designed with a rather sterile, clinical look, much to the vision of the aliens no doubt. Too much order, too clean. Luckily, there are still the shanty and small town environments to make things visually more interesting. It's quite a contrast when you compare the cities with abandoned towns with signs of life that have lived there. Design of the alien facilities look different too, and quite unexpectedly have more curves versus the blocky city style.

Character designs of the aliens and enemies are nice, detailed and come with sketches too. The Advent also look cool, stylish and futuristic. There are also vehicle designs, spacecrafts, troop transport, cars, and other props, e.g. weapons and interior designs.

Overall, the quality of the art is definitely top notch. However when it comes to the concepts, the ideas behind, I feel that the game studio is playing it too safe. The art feels so familiar, like I've seen them before. The art feels like they could come from Mass Effect. Yes, there are differences such as the ADVENT troopers and mechs being more sleek looking, but to me, the art direction quite similar to Mass Effect. That's just what I felt.

So yeah, it's still a good artbook but it could have been better if the game studios are more daring which unfortunately is not the case as nowadays it's all about making safe games that can make money.

Not as comprehensive as I would have liked. Some items (like enemies) only have half a page of concept art, while maps and scenery can take up entire pages. Just not "wowed" by it.

This book kicked my ass. I have known Bloodclot (aka John Joseph) for many years. We know each other from around the NYC hardcore/punk scene. He was always cool with me but until I read this book, his autobiography, I had no idea about his background, about how he grew up. As I read the first few chapters, tears welled up in my eyes. A lot of people talk about coming from the streets, when Bloodclot says it, sh*t is real. I have tremendous respect for John, all that he's endured, and who he's become, and I would recommend this book to anyone in a heartbeat. In his memoir, The Evolution of a Cro-Magnon, Joseph claims to have made $3,000 in just one week this way, mortified mothers flinging $10 bills at him if he'd just go away, while distraught, teary-eyed children demanded to know what was wrong with Santa. Lots of things were wrong with Santa. This colossal, at least mildly appalling act of deception (Joseph is not disabled physically or mentally, and Evolution makes clear that, at least onstage with his beloved New York hardcore band, the Cro-Mags, he was thoroughly intolerant of jolliness) is probably not the moral low point of his life. His riveting autobiography is a profoundly seedy affair: boyhood abuse while in foster care, a drug- and violence-addled adolescence on the streets of apocalyptic '70s New York, 15 years or so AWOL from the Navy, myriad Hare Krishna related improprieties, a brief but vivid stint fronting quite possibly the most physically terrifying band in New York City history, and, just for the hell of it, on page 377, crack addiction. Joseph has survived all this, and is understandably proud. Regarding the retarded-Santa ploy, he is understandably regretful, but not for the reasons you'd expect... Stays with you. I never eat Oreos now.

Let me tell you as a umm, wiser, older woman ( Ok, 45 plus..) I am probably not John Joseph's target audience. I first saw him in a you tube video of him making a vegan health smoothie. I knew who the Cro Mags were, but have NEVER even now, heard one of their songs. So, I knew this was not a book about Cro Mags, but more about John Joseph himself and how he went from a starving child in foster care, to a passionate vegan human. Wow this is some life he has had. I cried, I wanted to adopt that little boy and feed him. His story is so touching, you cannot walk away from it without compassion for what it takes to survive on the street. I am baffled how his extended family was not able to care for him. I am amazed how he has turned his life around and the passion he has. There was quite a bit about the Cro Mags and how he got there, but the whole book is not about that, contrary to what some reviewers where looking for I guess. I do not think he was bragging about his stealing, or what he had to do to survive. It was simply his story to tell, on what he simply had to do to eat. I,myself, do not really understand the Hare Krishna's but he found peace with them. I have led many people to buy his books. Again, this is his story, not just the Cro Mags story. It simply says it all in the title, how he evolved to where he is today. I encourage everyone to buy it.

This book will Spiritually change you..

I am an acquaintance of John's.he literally gave me a shirt and I thought about it for a bit about how talented and generous he is. His story makes mine look like a fairy tale.I still can never get used to a lot of the places we hung out at " The Alcatraz" and many parks got renamed and cleaned up alot.
This book is a must read ,and remains the only book I have ever read from cover to cover except for automotive tech books, that was my higher education.

Overall a great read, great story, and some straight up inspiration to anyone in need. Such a unique life John Joseph has lived and as a fan of the Cro-mags I couldn't wait to check it out. What I'd get out if it was much more than a story of one of the best front men in the history of hardcore music. Trials and tribulations, stories of the street, and some consciousness. It's a must read for the stories and it might even save your life if you're in a bad place. It's served as a positive for me when there was plenty of negativity in my life. Much respect John.

In this short book Zygmunt Bauman analyses the origins, contours and impact of this moral panic - he dissects, in short, the present-day migration panic. He shows how politicians have exploited fears and anxieties that have become widespread, especially among those who have already lost so much - the disinherited and the poor. But he argues that the policy of mutual separation, of building walls rather than bridges, is misguided. It may bring some short-term reassurance but it is doomed to fail in the long run. We are faced with a crisis of humanity, and the only exit from this crisis is to recognize our growing interdependence as a species and to find new ways to live together in solidarity and cooperation, amidst strangers who may hold opinions and preferences different from our own.

solidarity as mankind as an antidote to fear and rootlessness

Strangers at Our Door is a sociological work that has as its central thesis that a present crisis in the world today, the mass migration and disruption crisis, present an opportunity to show solidarity and express common humanity to all. Bauman argues that now is precisely not the time to wall off ourselves with a fear and anxiety that cannot be satiated. I am most familiar with Bauman's work of about 17 years ago, Liquid Modernity, where he described the condition of post modern man as liquid, not rooted and fearfully uncertain. He applies some of the thinking in that work to this long essay, to show how a way out of being liquid, or uncertain without roots, is to reject fear of the other. That a real consequence of today's world, where the world's events and information are available in a variety of instant ways, is that the hearer and reader are more easily manipulated. This does nothing but make liquid man more fearful and less secure.

Bauman, a Jewish Pole and insurgent against NAZI Germany in his youth, and later sociology professor in England, wrote this penultimate book (he died in January of 2017), as a commentary on the rise of populist nationalist political forces that are gaining increasing power in the western world. In Strangers at Our Door, he shows that one negative solution that many seek to social and cultural insecurity is the ideal of the 'strong - man', whether in politics or culturally, who is certain and who can speak and act against those outside while providing security in a time of what he calls moral panic.

His writing can be very complex and at times, quite flowery. His points are made as someone trying to cram everything he knows into his argument to make it as compelling as possible. This work may lose some readers in this attempt. But as an extended argument that a moral panic led by an failing to know who we are and our place in a throwaway and rapidly changing time, this is well worth considering and thinking deeply over.

Daniel Kusswurm has over 30 years of professional experience as a software developer and computer scientist. During his career, he has developed innovative software for medical devices, scientific instruments, and image processing applications. His educational background includes a BS in Electrical Engineering Technology along with an MS and PhD in Computer Science.

it was a good primer with a good level of detail

This book on Assembly covers a lot of the common uses of the language to date. Having had several years off of Assembly and returning, it was a good primer with a good level of detail. The source code is freely available and so far always compiles. The examples are well thought out and have a good progression of topics.

I would have given the book 4 stars save for the fact that there isnt a single exercise in the book left for the reader. And Assembly is certainly something that you shouldnt plan to develop ANY level of proficiency without sitting down and putting in the effort of failing until it just clicks. While this isnt meant to really be a text book, I would be much more excited about this book if, at the end of each chapter, there was even a minimal amount of directed programming exercises for the reader. Im learning a lot from this book, but Im now left to create my own worthwhile programming exercises, or search for them on the net--which is what I was doing before I bought the book.

I was looking for a publication that provided the right amount of preliminary background on modern Intel 80x86 microprocessors. The first two chapters struck the right balance. Moreover, I needed some good examples of how to set up data for and properly create SIMD (SSE) and AVX routines. Again, the author struck the right balance. I found this book provided a good mix of sample programs that demonstrated how to call inline assembly routines from C/C++ functions. Especially on target were the numerous, well laid out tables throughout the entire book. The price was right and all the 32- and 64-bit topics were right on the mark for me. Missing of course were sections on AVX2 (512-bit). Also, all the Appendices were missing in my book. I don't know if this was a misprint or what. The author referred to Appendix C several times in various chapters, but there were no Appendixes. Overall, I recommend this book for both novice and experienced assembly programmers. It contains good reference material.

About the Author

David Grembowski, Ph.D., M.A., is a professor in the Department of Health Ser- vices in the School�of Public Health and the Department of Oral Health Sciences in the School of Dentistry, and adjunct�professor in the Department of Sociology, at the University of Washington. He has taught health�program evaluation to graduate students for more than twenty years. His evaluation interests are�prevention, the performance of health programs and health care systems, survey research methods,�and the social determinants of population health. His other work has examined efforts to improve�quality by increasing access to care in integrated delivery systems; pharmacy outreach to provide�statins preventively to patients with diabetes; managed care and physician referrals; managed care�and patient-physician relationships and physician job satisfaction; cost-effectiveness of�preventive services for older adults; cost-sharing and seeing out-of-network physicians; social�gradients in oral health; local health department spending and racial/ethnic disparities in�mortality rates; fluoridation effects on oral health and dental demand; financial incentives and�dentist adoption of preventive technologies; effects of dental insurance on dental demand; and the�link between�mother and child access to dental care.

There are better evaluation books out there

Unfortunately, the better program evaluation books also cost significantly more. This book gives a decent overview of health program evaluation and provides basic information that is essential to this important field. However, it is not well-written or well-organized, which detracts considerably from the book's worth. I used it as a student in an evaluation course, and even the instructor didn't care for the book and based our exams off of class lectures rather than the book itself. The authors should go back and review this book and produce a new edition that is better organized, doesn't rely on the same 2-3 examples throughout the book, and uses figures and tables more effectively. If you can afford to pay more for another evaluation book, it would be well worth it.

This text on Program Eval is solid

This text outlines a comprehensive approach to program evaluation and provides an excellent college-level resource for training competent health program evaluators. Grant writers may particularly find it helpful in designing convincing program evaluation strategies to impress funders, though the text does not especially target that audience. The text's content is laid out in three sections: Asking the Question (the evaluation question, that is), Answering the Question, and Using the Answer for Decision-making. The text benefits from the tracking of health program examples during its discussion of a comprehensive list of evaluation concepts, techniques, and challenges, such as: target population identification, unintended program consequences, cost-benefit/effectiveness analysis, multiple times series design, a very detailed discussion of pre and post tests, etc., etc. Admittedly, the text at times delves into complex statistical details relating to program evaluation (e.g., it's section on disproportionate stratified sampling), and these may be beyond the college student who lacks a prior course in statistics. Nevertheless, these mathematically complex sections can be used as nonrequired reference sections in most college courses without any crucial loss from the text's benefit to the average future program evaluator. Probably the only 'weakness' in this text is one that is due to the subject matter, not due to the author's efforts, for program evaluation, like the related topics of grantmanship and health policy development, is an endeavor that does not easily fall into any intuitive outline. The author has used a pretty good over-arching format with his "asking the question" approach, but the fact is that any book on this topic will necessarily seem somewhat disjointed to the reader compared to books on topics like algebra, fleas, or the history of the chariot.
