Book Excerpt:
" Our Ancestors...the shoulders on which we stand.
Your Ancestors are always whispering wisdom in your ear; always calling you to advance the objectives of your bloodline.
It should be noted that regardless of what tradition you observe or have an affinity for; as an Afrakan there are certain fundamental concepts you must know when honoring those that have transcended to the next stage.
Your Ancestors are the empathic link between the corporeal realm and the spirit world as they have the compassion to have full innerstanding of what it is you are feeling and the emotions you are conveying when you commune with spirit for they have felt it and lived it themselves. Eternal spirit deities do not possess the same level of sensory access as those living in the physical realm or who have lived in the physical realm.
Being "dead" is not sufficient requisite for being a revered Egun/Lidlotis/Nananom Nsamanfo. The things you do during your physical existence will affect your standing once you transition. I do not subscribe to the notion that all beings who have transcended this life are worthy of honor or can serve as appropriate consulting sources for the purposes of divination.
Life is an upwards spiral....not a circle of redundancy. What this means is there's always opportunity for ascension, development, and growth; regardless of the plain of existence one resides.
For example, it would be foolish to imagine that one who lived a durational, unenlightened, anti-Afrakan existence while here in Aye (earth) would immediately be completely aware of the mysteries of existence because they experience the transformation of physical death. In kind, it would be equally foolish to imagine that someone of this sort would have the same wisdom to impart from the Ancestral realm as someone who manifested a life of enlightenment, knowledge, wisdom, and innerstanding and served as Jegna to their respective come-unity while on Aye."

Essential Reading for Anyone Interested in Modern African Spirituality
By Awo Osun
I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to know more about how modern Africans in the Diaspora and on the continent honor the ancient traditions of our people. I was very happy to find this book, and it has become one of my favorites!
The author provides a succinct point of entry for beginnners and the newly initiated as well. There are so many people who have come into this tradition without proper instruction, and are seeking the information they need to transcend and transform their experience. The heart of the Ifa and Orisha traditions is personal power through the development of character, and this book is an excellent guide on how to cultivate that power.
Currently, there are many books that explore the Santeria and Lukumi manifestations of the ancient Yoruba faith, but very few that provide information on how African Americans (non-Caribbeans) have translated the ancestral faith into our own modern practice. Do not be fooled by anyone who says that our culture is lost or irrelevant, or that our spirituality is limited only to the faiths of Abraham or the practice of folk-magick (Hoodoo.) We have our own cosmology, philosophy, and unique world-view that has survived the many ages of our suffering and development and is now growing and transforming at an astounding rate. The ancestors live! Read this book and you will find out what is really going on in the community- millions of Black people all over the world continue to venerate our ancestors and their deities. Author HRU Assaan will show you how.
The book is divided into several parts, dealing with modern and traditional terminology from some of our various cultural manifestations (Yoruba, Akan, Rastafarian, Vodun, etc.), a treatise on the philosophy of universal African spirituality, a primer on Obi divination, an introduction to several of the major Orisha, and a formulary for spiritual baths and incenses for a variety of purposes. The author has managed to provide a wealth of information in a compact format; this will be your go-to book as you begin or enrich your own spiritual practice. Overall, it is a pretty thorough introduction for the beginning spiritualist or any seeker.
The tone of the book is very casual and well-paced, you will feel like you are having a conversation with a friendly and knowledgable teacher. It is well-written and edited, as well as easy to understand. Just a thoroughly enjoyable read, and one that I'm glad to have in my collection!

Asante Saana!
By Daima
"Grasping The Root of Divine Power" was much more than I anticipated upon first glance. I have tried several times to create my own spiritual altar and line up spiritually with my own ancestry and Afrikan acestors as a whole; but I hardly knew where to begin. Speaking to other people created more confusion. This book gives the reader both a beginning foundation yet also encourages liberation and following your own path.
As I read this book I asked this question, "Can I really call myself a Conscious Afrikan without awakening and embracing the spirit of the Afrikan?" The answer came back as a resounding NO! At best I can merely scratch the surface of Awareness. I was happy to be Aware because so many of us are asleep, however I believe true fulfillment of my purpose and destiny can only be achieved through Afrikan Spirituality. "Grasping The Root of Divine Power" has given me a template to begin my spiritual journey coupled with freedom and connectivity with our Divine.
I know that I will use this book as a resource and a reference guide again and again. I am extremely grateful to have this book as a part of my growing library of Afrikan Study materials.
Again I say...
Asante Saana!

A MUST read
By T. S. Thompson
"How to BE an Afrakan" offered me step by step instructions on how to connect to the Ancestors. The information was clear, and easy to follow for a novice, like myself. More importantly, I feel that I can take the lessons I've learned and apply them to my daily life.
Thank you HRU Assaan -- what a wonderful gift.
