Hold out for an improved edition?
By lilybart
This is the paperback version of the former hardcover, updated for a computer-and-mobiel world.
Due to the surprisingly numerous errors, both of the CD and in the text, some of the items relative to the earlier edition will appear in your new workbook, providing inconsistencies with the text and the audio, or even within the text.
For new learners of Dutch, this can be confusing or invisible, resulting in errors in your learning.
Other errors include:
- badly formatted tables and texts
- missing audio tracks referenced in text but not included on CD
- confusing layout/formatting of matching exercises
- deliberately incorrect Dutch to mimic a German traveller's mistake (!)
- the use of passive in a text without reference to grammar support of this new tense
- various typos you will have to notice and self-edit in your book
- problem with the intended symbols (ie. schwa, euro, etc.) not formatting properly and looking like other letters or numbers
- English translations with unexpected accents
- English spellings of (contextually) Dutch words/place names
- a dialogue where only one person is addressed on a phone call, but 'jullie' is used instead of 'jij'
- missing bolding despite its being necessary for the exercise
- reference to a picture that doesn't exist
- the "Dat mag niet" graphic missing an X through an unwanted action (binnen zonder kloppen)
- some answers in the key refer to the old edition's answer or are wrong
(I'm only up to Les 15, so that's a sample of what I've found so far).
Overall, I'm still glad that a) Dutch is being promoted and b) there is a workbook to support it. Being able to do so many written exercises for a less popular language is great! The larger format from the smaller hardcover allows you to write into the book if needed, and the paperback format is sturdy, with good quality paper.
Yes the recordings are speedy, as are the exercises, so be within reach of the rewind/back one track button. You will also have to go back to earlier recordings to do fill-in-the-blanks, and "listen and repeats".
With the more open layout and white space, there is handy colour coding and indexing of sections, with references to the end-notes grammar section, which you will have to keep flipping back to for reference.
The lessons are challenging and varied, with exercises of increasing difficulty (look for when the switch occurs from being given already-conjugated words to fill in blanks to those you have to change the forms of yourself). Handy cultural or lifestyle topics included, such as writing letters, ordering in restaurants, dealing with shop assistants and vendors.

Outstanding resource for self-study
By GadgetGuy
It's nice to see this excellent book from Prisma available in the USA; I brought back a copy from Amsterdam during my visit there in late 2010.
My time for study is limited, and I have found it necessary to repeat chapters a few times, either in succession or revisiting later, to fully grasp everything presented. As a result, in a year's time, I've only gotten about halfway through. In addition, I also use several other resources for learning, including dictionaries, reading newspapers online, flash cards, Bieneke Berendsen's excellent Dutch grammar resources, and more. So while my progress in this book (and in general) has been slow, it's also been enjoyable, insightful and educational. The fact I can understand the majority of Dutch newspaper articles I read is a testament to that.
I have only one complaint about this book specifically; well, two... First, it does contain some minor errors here and there. Nothing serious, and nothing that would steer the learner in a wrong direction, but annoying just the same. Second, the audio dialogs on the included CDs are spoken very rapidly. While this is great in one sense... It's how native speakers speak... It requires repetition and massive effort to even begin to comprehend it.
In fact, this is really the drawback to book-based self-study... Spoken language. You can learn only just so much, so accurately, from mocking native speakers heard on a CD. That said, I have found that learning a language is a strange mixture of vocabulary, grammar, and the ability to decode and encode language in both written and spoken forms, and it simply doesn't all happen in parallel, no matter how much you might want it to.
Of course, finding conventional Dutch language instruction in the US is nearly impossible, so self-study options seem about the only route despite the drawbacks.
"Dutch for Self-Study" is, however, a really nicely done, contemporary, up-to-date guide for those wishing to study Dutch at home.
