Why I like BFRPG

Here's why I like the BFRPG system:

Ease of Use- BFRPG is one of the simplest yet functional RPGs I've seen in a long time. The easy mechanics and basic options are quite easy to use, yet they give a very firm base to the game. There are only 4 classes - Fighter, Cleric, Magic User, and Thief - and yet you can create almost any archetype imaginable. The rules for combat are short and orderly as well, yet they cover almost any possible situation. A quick section on optional rules allows the GM to make his or her preferred changes to the game through a "canon" base, and gives newer GMs an opportunity to experiment with changing the rules. These flexible yet solid rules provide an excellent base to work from.

Modern Ideas- While taking cues from the original (before Advanced) version of D&D, BFRPG is based in part on the 3.5 SRD. Some grognards will laugh at me for saying this, but there are actually a lot of new, good ideas out there. BFRPG takes the best of these (such as ascending armor class) and incorporates them into its system flawlessly. These new ideas make the game attractive to players of third and fourth edition who are looking for something different, as well as making it distinct from games that directly clone OD&D.

Community- BFRPG was based on Chris Gonnerman's ideas, but was shaped immeasurably by the Dragonsfoot community. The rules have thus gone through countless revisions, so many that I can not find an error in the core rules yet! Also, the community is devoted to churning out countless modules and supplements (see next reason).

Resources- There are, I believe, 21 free, fan-created rules supplements (counting the articles in the Old Dungeoneer's Almanack) on the BFRPG downloads page. There are also 11 modules (three of which include several separate adventures and one which includes a sketch of a campaign world and a "home base"). Finally, there are 9 character sheets (one of which comes in 5 different languages) and four DM sheets (including a spreadsheet of all the monsters available so far). BFRPG is also compatible with great, old school modules like Keep on the Borderlands (of which a homage version is also available on the site).

Art- The art in the BFRPG core book is as good as any I have seen so far (in a RPG book, at least). The giants (by Luigi Castellani) and the Stirge and Shrieker (by Andy "ATOM" Tailor) are especially great.

This game can be played completely for free and all of the information in this book can be found free online. This should show how good of a game it is that people would spend money to buy it. Great layout, perfect art for the game, and great rules make this an excellent choice for a D&D substitute.

A new Fantasy RPG with Honest Old School Feel!!!

So I had heard about this game online and after checking out the free (available for download) version, I decided to pick up a copy of the printed version. Now, I first have to mention that I am an old school gamer and my friends and I started playing RPGs in 1980 (at the age of 8) with the D&D basic box set (and the Expert set very shortly thereafter). I began playing 1st edition AD&D shortly after that and those versions of Dungeons & Dragons have always been dear to my heart. Having said that, this book took me right back to my childhood! It truly has the feel of the old box set of Basic, Expert and Companion rules, but it does have some AD&D elements added as well. Dwarves, Elves and Haflings are now truly races and not character classes for starters. The original 4 classes are present (Fighter, Cleric, Magic-User and Thief) and function much as they did in the early days, and the Elf can even multi-class as a Fighter/Magic-User to represent what the Elf class from Basic set D&D was like.

The book has a great Monster section and has tons of the monsters that will be used on a frequent basis (the goblins, bugbears, dragons, undead, lizardmen and all the others we grew up hacking away at), and at over 70 pages of just monsters... Believe me, this book contains enough to keep you going for quite a while. Some optional rules are included as well and some are pretty cool. Rules for creating magic items that cast their own spells (we're talking about weapons as well as wands), a few different ways on how to handle characters dropping to 0 hit points (death, the -10 hp option, and a few others), and these are just two examples. The book also includes wandering monster tables for various terrains and dungeon levels, several examples of magic items and weapons, and various spells. There really isn't anything that feels missing from this book to be honest.

This company makes all of their products available for free from their website (as a download), and also offers them in print form for a very affordable price. Now, I know some people will read this and think that it doesn't offer enough races or character classes. So, I have to mention that the company's website offers downloads on at least ten different races (Gnomes, half-elves, 1/2 orcs, 1/2 ogres, and various new races like dog men, and many more). The site also offers rules on a few new classes including Monks (Great Adepts), Illusionists, Necromancers, Paladins, Rangers and Druids as well as a couple of character kits you can add to various classes (such as Bard, Barbarian, Sage, etc) which add cool new traits to your existing class at a cost of needing 10% to 25% more XP points per level. Skills are introduced if you want to add them to the game and several new spells are added as well (for both Cleric, M-U, and specialty spells for Druids, Illusionists and Necromancers).

The cool thing is that you can use any or all of these options as part of your game. The adventures I've checked out so far include The Glain Campaign and Morgansfoot and they are both well written with nice story lines. So this seems to be an RPG that will be supported with new product for a good while to come. One parting thought is for anyone who still has their old 1st edition AD&D books or basic (expert, companions, masters, etc) set is that you can use basically any spell or monster from those games as the stats for both monsters and spells match up nicely with this system.

A last final thought is for those who are only familiar with D20 RPGs. The Armor Class system is derived from the D20 RPG which means that the higher the AC the better (as opposed to wanting that -10 AC from the early D&D/AD&D). There is also a download available from the company's website that allows VERY EASY adaptation of any monster from any D20 monster manual.

So for anyone that misses the old school feel... This game is for you! For anyone that only knows D20 RPGs and who want to experience what old school D&D was like (without having to pay collector prices)... This game is for you too! Do yourselves a HUGE FAVOR and use your search engines at least check this game out on the company's website. It is well worth the $8.49 (inlcuding the $4 shipping charge) for it here on Amazon.

Ruminative, personal, and reportorial all at once, Solomon--who won a National Book Award for his treatise on depression, The Noonday Demon--begins by describing his own experience as the gay son of heterosexual parents, then goes on to investigate the worlds of deaf children of hearing parents, dwarves born into “normal” families, and so on. His observations and conclusions are complex and not easily summarized, with one exception: The chapter on children of law-abiding parents who become criminals. Far From the Tree is a TOME. I mean, it's a great big, heavy book in every sense of the word. To be honest, I was a little intimidated when my copy arrived! I didn't read it cover to cover, but started with the autism chapter because it was relevant to our family. I found it to be a very well-researched, sensitive look at how autism can affect a parent's life, hopes, and perceptions.

That chapter was so good, I moved to the crime chapter and stayed up way too late because I could not put it down. Thank you, Mr. Solomon for pointing out the absurdities in our justice system when it comes to dealing with juvenile crime. (And as for the reviewer who questioned including crime at all, this book focuses on any possible way that a child can turn out different than their parents expected, and being guilty of a crime definitely seems appropriate to me.) I learned a lot from this chapter, and was particularly fascinated by the Klebolds' story. Once again, Soloman wrote with sensitivity about a very difficult and controversial topic.

From there I read the chapter on dwarfism, and then finally turned to the first pages of the book and started reading the beginning! I wanted to learn about how families deal with a diagnosis of autism; instead I learned about how families deal with all kinds of unexpected outcomes, how resilient parents can be when faced with hardships, and how connected are the identities of parents and their children. As a parent, I understand the constant struggle to balance who we want our children to be and who they actually are. "There is no such thing as reproduction" may be my new mantra.

One more thing: in 700 pages (okay, I admit, I didn't read the Acknowledgments) I never found an example of "martyrdom" that one reviewer complained about. The book relates honest responses from parents in the trenches. Parenting isn't always fun, even for parents of kids who have no extra challenges. But Far From the Tree isn't a chronicle of long-suffering devastated parents; there are plenty of positive, hopeful, make-the-best-of-it moments as well.

It's a fascinating book for anyone interested in parenting, psychology, or the history of disability. Highly recommended.

A Moving And Informative Book On Raising Children Different From Ourselves

How do we raise children who are profoundly different than we are?
This is the question posed by award-winning writer Andrew Solomon in "Far From The Tree." How do parents deal with raising a child who isn't what they expected him or her to be? What if the child is autistic? Deaf? Has Down Syndrome? And how much does nurture have to do with the people our children become? Or is it more due to nature?

Solomon began writing this book twelve years ago, after attending a protest of deaf students who opened his eyes to seeing people with `differences' as not having disabilities, but having their own unique gifts. He follows the lives of many families who are faced with the challenge of raising children who are profoundly different than they expected them to be. Each of these stories reveals in their own way the nature of humanity, the unconditional love of parents for their children, and the desire for all humans to be valued as individuals.

Solomon also shines a spotlight on his own upbringing. The gay son of heterosexual parents, who was also dyslexic and bullied for not conforming to the stereotypical expectations of what a typical male should be, Solomon reveals how he overcame his insecurities to not only accept himself, but to decide to become a father.

Everyone will be talking about this book and everyone should. Mr. Solomon's deeply personal narration and vivid story-telling combine with extensive factual scholarship to make compelling reading out of topics you might otherwise expect to find repugnant or marginal. Full disclosure: I read an early draft and have been waiting ever since for others to have this chance to expand their hearts by reading it, too.

The book offers a world of information on particular conditions; it ponders the wider implications of choice and identity for both the parents and the children dealing with dwarfism, deafness, criminality, etc. And just as learning you are not alone with a special gift or disability can be liberating for an individual person, so learning that other families are dealing with the same conditions can give heart to parents who feel isolated. Moreover, those who have had to focus on one particular condition will be led to see wider commonalities. All of us know someone who is profoundly different from their parents. And because Mr. Solomon brings coherence to the book by thinking across conditions, he implicitly opens the way for thinking about analogous conditions not specifically covered.

What is most deeply moving is Mr. Solomon's ability to portray each individual as a unique person. The book is full of voices and stories, a reminder that we are all always surrounded by people who are like us, different from us, and challenged in ways we've never thought of before. Together, they are sobering reminders of how deep the pain of the human condition can be, but also sources of inspiration and hope.

Mr. Solomon is never dogmatic. He has opinions, but he also makes clear that no formulaic rules apply to the choices parents and children must make because every circumstance is different and every person is a unique combination of his or her own abilities and values. If the book urges anything, it is to love and see the power of human compassion, understanding, and hope.

The main part of the book concentrates on the investigation of the relationship between the environment and its users. This method evaluates and summarizes all the selected habitats by means of the human activities in relation to the characteristics of the built environment (Sleep, Hygiene, Food, Work and Leisure). In addition to analyzing the available data, it integrates the astronauts' personal experiences into the evaluation.

The author conducted structured interviews with astronauts with a special focus on human activity. The book confronts the findings from relevant literature and analysis - based on crew transcripts, spacecraft drawings and mission images - with the personal experiences of the users: the astronauts and cosmonauts. To facilitate orientation and to ease comparison with architectural drawings and diagrams each category was assigned a specific colour. Design directions for each category conclude each chapter.

Living and working in extra-terrestrial habitats means being potentially vulnerable to very harsh environmental, social, and psychological conditions. With the stringent technical specifications for launch vehicles and transport into space, a very tight framework for the creation of habitable space is set. These constraints result in a very demanding “partnership” between the habitat and the inhabitant.

 

This book is the result of researching the interface between people, space and objects in an extra-terrestrial environment. The evaluation of extra-terrestrial habitats in comparison to the user’s perspective leads to a new framework, comparing these buildings from the viewpoint of human activity. It can be used as reference or as conceptual framework for the purpose of evaluation. It also summarizes relevant human-related design directions. The work is addressed to architects and designers as well as engineers.

A Strong Discussion of the Challenges of Human Habilability in Space

There has been considerable effort of late to investigate the issue of habitability of spacecraft, stations, and quarters. Not only has there been long duration studies undertaken by life scientists, but also engineering analyses sponsored through such activities as the “100 Year Starship Study” that DARPA recently undertook. Social scientists have also been investigating this subject and the work of Nicholas de Monchaux on spacesuits and Albert A. Harrison on the issues of medical and environmental hazards, as well as life support and habitation. All of these studies, whether scientific, technological, or social science seem oriented toward the same end, understanding more fully what is necessary for human beings to be able to live in space for extended period.

Sandra Häuplik-Meusburger’s work, Architecture for Astronauts: An Activity-Based Approach, contributes to this effort through an architectural exploration of habitats and the needs of astronauts in undertaking longer, more complicated voyages than ever before. The author is on the architecture faculty of the Institute for Architecture and Design at the Technical University of Vienna, in Austria. Working through her study in a chronological manner, Häuplik-Meusburger discusses initially the first American and Soviet space habitats, the Apollo capsule, Lunar Module, and Space Shuttle as well as the Space Stations: Salyut, Skylab, Mir, and the International Space Station. For each she offers an assessment of the configuration, its human factors engineering, and its overall habitability, or its lack thereof. That latter was mostly the case for both nations as engineers initially tended to undervalue the issue of habitability. That changed over time, and the International Space Station has been altered for human occupancy and comfort.

The author then explores the relationship between the astronauts and cosmonauts and the built environment that they must occupy. She is at her best in assessing the nature of the key elements of these containers in Earth orbit. Each astronaut is asked to engage in the human activities sleep, hygiene, food, work, and leisure. Using a series of structured interviews—almost anthropological in nature—as well as a range of other sources, Häuplik-Meusburger assesses the relatively Spartan and uncomfortable conditions found on most spacecraft. It is a truism that if true spacefaring is ever to occur, unlike the relatively short “camping trips” thus far undertaken, more attention will have to be paid to this aspect of the task.

This is an intelligent, challenging book, perhaps too technical for some readers but nonetheless useful for designers and architects, engineers and other professionals. It is a useful source for historians but it is most assuredly not an history. Such a work has yet to be written, but it could be a rewarding exercise for someone to undertake.

User-Friendly Overview of Human Factors in Space

I was came to this book in a roundabout way, but I was really glad that I did: Architecture for Astronauts provides a high-quality, user-friendly overview of habitats designed for long-term human occupation in space. If you note the price, you'll see that the book is not inexpensive, but the author, Sandra Häuplik-Meusburger (hereafter SHM), has gone to great lengths to make the content accessible and visually appealing.

Beginning with an overview of the spacecraft--Apollo, the Salyut series, Skylab, Mir, Shuttle, and the International Space Station (ISS)--the author explains why some spacecraft were covered, but not others. For instance, while the Mercury, Gemini, and Soyuz spacecraft all had long missions, they were not included because they were more or less made for transportation, not habitation. Another nice feature of the front matter is that it provides infographics depicting how mission time and habitat space are allocated. In the case of describing the interior space, SHM depicts the spacecraft architecturally and logically. For instance, there's a nice table on pages 92-93 showing where astronaut activities are performed within the common area(s) of a spacecraft--work, sleep, hygiene, eating, and leisure--and which are performed in a detached area. For instance, an extravehicular activity (EVA) is depicted as being "outside the circle," while eating, hygiene, and leisure occur within a common area or areas.

Architecture for Astronauts: An Activity-based Approach (Springer Praxis Books)

The color-coding is also useful, as it ties to the colored edging tabs for each primary section (sleep, work, etc.). Along with color-coding activities in space, SHM provides some handy tables, such as the one above, which list the attributes of individual spacecraft vertically to allow the reader to get an overview of that system as well as horizontal comparisons by attribute. Also, each major section includes a set of lessons learned (called "Design Directions") for future spacecraft designs. Lastly, each topic is covered in a series of two-page spreads so you don't have to flip back and forth. In short, a lot of work went into making this book visually appealing, accessible, and useful.

I would consider this to be a good introductory textbook providing a historical overview of human-rated space systems for the space architecture practitioner. If you're looking for a good look into human factors in space, I would recommend this book as a starting point, then shift over to Out of This World: The New Field of Space Architecture, which concentrates more on the structures than the astronauts and Patricia Santy's Choosing the Right Stuff, which delves into the evaluation and selection of astronauts (and which I still need to read!).

Choosing the Right Stuff: The Psychological Selection of Astronauts and Cosmonauts (Human Evolution, Behavior, and Intelligence)

For someone like me, who's an enthusiast, the book provides just about the right level of detail. If you want to know more, each chapter provides an extensive list of sources, including interviews conducted with nine astronauts across the entire range of systems (though I was mildly surprised that there were no women included among the interviewees).

I mentioned that I came to this book in a roundabout way, so I'll explain that briefly. The author of this text coauthored a paper with an American I met at the Global Space Exploration Conference. That paper concentrated on one area covered in Architecture for Astronauts: the inclusion of plants as a way to improve the quality of life for astronauts on long-duration space missions. I liked the paper, became friends with the coauthor, then acquainted with the author via Facebook.

What I got most out of this book is how downright unusual and unnatural human travel through space is. I've been on the machinery end of NASA for six years, and I tend to forget about the people actually doing the work. It's not just a matter of making machines that can survive launch, orbit, and landing in space environments, you have to make those machines capable of keeping humans alive, safe, healthy, and sane for days, weeks, or months at a time. It's not just a matter of cramped quarters or zero gravity, but radiation, loud noises, isolation from friends and family, and overwork that can creep up on the astronaut and make him or her a little stressed. And after reading the section on "Hygiene," I've never been so grateful for Earth gravity and regularly functioning toilets. At any rate, we're still a long way from Star Trek and "normal" life in space.

If Architecture for Astronauts has one flaw, it is that the two-page-per topic format prevents the reader from getting too far in depth with any one subject, which made me want to know more about how all this stuff fits together. In that case, I suppose, this book is a resounding success!

This book provides us an insight into the practice of "astronautship", leaning on the facts of the daily life up there. In short, people in a hostile space, in need of a confined environment. This is where architecture for astronauts steps in. The striking role of "human factors" seem to stay at the highest level of system architecture of space missions, as we are "just humans" all the way long to the stars.

Very Practical, Enjoyable Book

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this devotional book. There are 9 studies which each include a topic (such as "Focusing on God's Character"), a bible passage illustration the topic, and a sample prayer. There are also many prompts for group discussion. This book gave me confidence that I was praying more accurately and more in accordance to God's will; therefore it made me even more bold to approach the throne of our God in prayer.

It went On and On

I got this book to use in a local Bible Sudy group. We were studying prayer with our objective being this: that once we were through with the study of this little book, we would better know how to approach God and pray effectively. At least that was my objective.
As a sudy tool, I found this book discouraging. It offered two modes of study...one that took longer than the other, but covered the same information...the information in the book supplemented by Scriptural passages. I found the two modes of study to be confusing and our leader must have also as he followed neither mode. He just plowed through the information in the book. In many instances the "longer mode" just meant that more time was allowed for personal or silent prayer. I do not need printed instructions to tell me how to do that. So the Study Modes, which took up a fair amount of print, were useless to me.
Introductory questions and/or questions to initiate discussion. At the beginning and end of each lesson, a question or two was given to presumably stimulate the reader or the group to think about prayer or about things that MIGHT be related to prayer. The questions initiated group discussion and interactivity in the group. I found them to be simplistic and not always that closely related to prayer. Also, one question was always asked."How have you seen God working in your life this week?" I realize that we were learning and we needed to stay on track, but I like variety and this question got old after the second week. The whole group seemed to approach it with the following attitude: "Well, not that question again!" I would like to have seen things like: "What did you pray for this week that happened?" "Or did not happen." "Why do you think this occurred?" or "After using the techniques taught last week, was your prayer life effected positively, negatively, or not at all?" (And our leader DID add those questions in so the group did not just fall over from lack of interest or spark.)I mean that is just routine stuff, but was generally only hinted at in the book. Our group was not a "ho Hummmm" group, but the questions dragged us in that direction.
Specific prayer techniques WERE taught and were backed scripturally. We went over various of David's effective prayers; prayers that were used in the rebuilding of Jeruselem; silent prayer; intercessional prayer; and answers to the ever present "Why were my prayers NOT answered?" question. The backbone of the book centered on those items and it was interesting, but it was tedious. It was all stuff we had heard before and it was presented in a less that stimulating manner. Most of the book was just didactic. Do this. Do that and this, that and the other will occur. It was not brilliant. It was not spashy. It had no zing. It did not make me want to go shout and get in touch with God. It made me want to slither into my prayer closet, close the door and suffocate. No prayer closet joy here, just lifeless information.
We had a brilliant leader. He went to all sorts of trouble to add extra information, background, additional information to this book. But for me, it just fell flat. I have read probably only 30 books on prayer. That is not many considering how many there are and the various views people have on our pipeline to God. But, of all I have read, I must say, this was the least interesting, the least joyful, the least uplifting, and the least provider of new or, any, amazing information. It was a dud!

Classic HGB

Having read "Having it All" and "Sex and the Single Girl" about 80 times each, I was thrilled to find this book for sale. I'm only 34 but Helen's breezy, funny, irrevant style is timeless, ageless, and unforgetable. Sure, some stuff is dated and a bit sexist, but Helen is the ballsy, brassy dame we all wish we had in our lives giving us "the straight story". Funny, interesting, and full of that inimiatble Helen sass, it's a bargain!

Helen Gurley Brown was an interesting woman, This book was fun to read due to her sometimes outrageous views and she gives valuable advice to those of us over 50. It is dated of course, but not across the board. I have ordered a few more of her books because I enjoy her gutsy, outspoken style.
